Mission Statement

The mission of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley is to improve the quality of life in the community we live, by providing help and creating hope for individuals and families experiencing a crisis in their lives, regardless of race or religion. Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley and all Catholic Charities throughout the United States are committed to help end poverty in America by addressing and responding to the core issues of poverty, and in a more direct way, offering services to help families achieve self-sufficiency and financial independence. CCRGV anticipates enhancing the emergency assistance program, placing a stronger emphasis on stabilization and self-sufficiency for individuals seeking emergency assistance.

About This Cause

How we serve our community: • The Emergency Assistance Program supports individuals through rental and utility assistance, temporary shelter, fire loss assistance, funeral assistance, food, toys, clothing, and other needs, which may arise. Additionally, the program offers prescription for those who cannot afford their medication or equipment as well as transportation for medical services outside the Rio Grande Valley. • The Homelessness Prevention Program focuses on homelessness and at-risk households. Through HUD’s Emergency Solutions Grant Program (ESG), Catholic Charities provides temporary financial assistance, housing relocation and stabilization services to individuals and families who have no home or would be homeless but for this assistance. • The Military Family Relief and Homelessness Prevention Program provides assistance to military service members and households within the community who are at-risk of becoming homeless. Through this program, individuals who are in need and qualify will be provided financial assistance to cover the cost of utility and/or rent payments(s) and utility and/or rent security deposit payments. Due to specific funding sources, only McAllen families facing eviction and/or utility disconnection are eligible. • The Counseling Program promotes healthy individuals, families and marriages in the Rio Grande Valley. The licensed counseling staff at Catholic Charities provides individual and group counseling specific to the needs of the individual, couple or family. • The Pregnancy Counseling Program offers counseling services and resources to parents of unborn babies up to the first year of the child’s life. Individuals or couples can participate in pregnancy, childbirth and parenting classes as well as receive counseling and mentoring assistance with career and educational decisions. Clients have access to the CCRGV Baby Boutique where they may obtain clothing, diapers, blankets and other baby items. When necessary agency referrals are provided. • The Child and Adult Care Food Program contributes to childhood wellness by providing healthy meals or snacks throughout the year. Most of these children are from food-insecure households who rely on meals during the school year to strengthen these growing bodies and minds. In addition to distributing nourishing food, children are involved in age-appropriate activities that build self-esteem and produce positive interactions with others. • The Summer Food Service Program contributes to childhood wellness by providing healthy meals or snacks during the summertime. Most of these children are from food-insecure households who rely on meals during the school year to strengthen these growing bodies and minds. In addition to distributing nourishing food, children are involved in age-appropriate activities that build self-esteem and produce positive interactions with others. • The Disaster Relief Program provides assistance to victims of a natural disaster through reconstruction of damaged homes, obtaining appliances, furniture, mattresses, clothing, school supplies and other essential items. Hundreds of families impacted by disasters have received assistance through this program. • The Humanitarian Crisis Relief efforts began in June 2014 due to the influx of immigrant children and families crossing the U.S. border and needing a safe place during their journey. Through a coordinated partnership with the City of McAllen, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Department of Homeland Security, other faith-based organizations plus hundreds of volunteers and generous donors, the humanitarian respite center offers human dignity to the stranger in our midst. Men, women, children and infant refugees and families receive a warm meal, a shower and clothing as well as medicine and other supplies, before they continue on their journey.
