Mission Statement
Our Mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. Our vision is that all children achieve success in life. Youth mentoring works. It’s simple: kids cannot model what they can’t see. Professional staff from Big Brothers Big Sisters carefully build and support each match with a Big and a Little, and ensure it meets the strictest standards. Agencies strive for matches that are not only safe and well suited to each child’s needs, but also harmonious and built to last. The entire matching process, from the initial screening to the final pairing—and beyond—is made possible by your financial support. Because Big Brothers Big Sisters is a national organization, we are able to conduct in-depth, research-based surveys that quantify the impact of our programs. Program outcomes show that the children in our BBBS program achieve more than their unmentored peers. Children matched with a mentor for 1 year show improvement in 3 focus areas: self-confidence, education, and are more likely to avoid interactions with the juvenile justice system. 86% had improved self-confidence - 81% had improved attitude towards school - 83% had an improved sense of the outlook for their future. Mentoring is effective, and our program is making a difference right here in Northwest Arkansas. Measurements consistently show that children in our program have greater mental health and educational outcomes than their unmentored peers. When you support Big Brothers Big Sisters you’re not just giving a donation; you’re investing in a Child’s future.
About This Cause
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas Since 1993, Big Brothers Big Sisters NWA has been offering one-to-one mentoring services in Washington and Benton Counties. Thanks to community and corporate support, all services are provided completely free-of-cost to every volunteer (Big), child, and family that enters our doors. It costs $1,000 to create and monitor a Community-based match and $750 for a Site-Based match. Year 1 is the most expensive as it requires an in-depth screening process (FBI level National Sex Offender Registry Check, layered background checks, a thorough interview, and monthly check-ins from our team of trained social workers). The Big will also go to a 2-hour cohort training to learn and understand about the culture of poverty and the hardships our families face. We consistently have a large list of 30-50 children waiting to be matched with a Big in our program, specifically boys. Out of all children served almost 65% are male. Our longest waiting Little has been waiting for over 2.5 years to meet his Big Brother. We have started conducting virtual recruitment events with corporations, universities, and local community partners to help us recruit volunteers and match more Littles, but office closures have challenged the way we typically operate. Your investment will help pay for the recruitment, interview, assessment, background check and training of the volunteer, the interview and assessment of the youth, the introduction, and match meeting, monthly match monitoring, and 1 free monthly activity for each match. Due to the year-round ongoing need for mentoring, your support will be used when provided. Volunteer "Bigs" are always the biggest need for our organization. We encourage you to support BBBSNWA either financially or by becoming a Big, Big Couple (with a significant other) or Big Family (with your children), or Big Co-workers (with a colleague from your office).
