About This Cause

MISSION STATEMENT: To help economically and socially disadvantaged children in getting education and thereby enabling them to establish in the society  To assist poor and needy women in getting training so that they can be financially contributing members of the family  To provide food, clothes, and healthcare services to starving and less advantaged people  To assist economically disadvantaged people with job training and income generating capital to help them become self-reliant  To provide emergency relief and other support to the victims of natural disasters SKILL DEVELOPMENT: To empower youth and alleviate poverty ECHO continued skill training programs in mobile phone repair, computer skills, knitting/garments, auto-mechanic/driving, general electric, sewing/dress making, and refrigeration/air condition. In 2013 ECHO had coverage in 28 districts. with a total of 5 training centers (1 specific to women); Dhaka, Jessore, Rangpur, Chittagong, and WDP-Dhaka. Challenges: Employment is the most challenging aspect of the skill development program. Approximately 70% are employed and of those 50% are self-employed. Goal: ECHO is creating an entrepreneurial program to help more students become self-employed. HEALTHCARE: Serving the people of Bangladesh with health care in slum areas is a key priority for ECHO. ECHO treated lots of patients for eye cataracts problem in collaboration with Rangpur Health and Blind Care Center with one volunteer doctor and two volunteer paramedics. 48.6% of Bangladesh’s children under the age of 5 are chronically malnourished. Millions of children and women are suffering from preventable conditions. ECHO provides healthcare to slum area from a newly built facility in Mirpur reaching 28,564 patients. The center is equipped with a full diagnostic, which has Ultrasonogram, ECG, X-Ray, Urine/Stool tests among other health care amenities. 1 full time doctor, 1 nurse, and 3 volunteer surgeons have been staffed.  Challenge: Sustaining the facility and providing facilities to more slum areas is a challenge and goal for ECHO. SCHOLARSHIP PROJECT: Thescholarshipprojectawards$23,000to175students.ProvidingeducationtotheyouthofBangladeshisimportanttoensuringbetteropportunitiesfortheunderprivileged. Challenges:The scholarships only provide access to education but not necessarily improve the education in Bangladesh. DISTRIBUTION OF STUDENTS Thescholarshipprojectawards$23,000to175students.ProvidingeducationtotheyouthofBangladeshisimportanttoensuringbetteropportunitiesfortheunderprivileged. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS  Goals: The Adopt-A-School program will provide better educational facilities, improve infrastructure, and provide scholarships. In Bangladesh 61 districts out of 64 are endangered/ contaminated with arsenic. This hazardous agent poses as one of the major health threats in Bangladesh. On the other hand frequent occurrence of water borne diseases especially diarrhea is attributed to unsanitary condition, poor hygiene and unhygienic sanitary practices in Bangladesh. The coastal belt of Bangladesh is identified as saline area where complex hydrological situation makes drinking water supply difficult compared to other parts of the country. Because of the scarcity of safe drinking water diarrhoeal diseases break out several times every year in the coastal belt causing death to hundreds of people. In partnership with Muslim Aid, ECHO provided access to safe water supply facilities. Total numbers of 02 deep tube-wells were installed for safe water supply to the vulnerable groups. All these tube-wells were installed to the depth where ground water is free from arsenic contamination & Salinity with direct beneficiaries of 100 families and indirect beneficiaries of over 1000 people. In 2013, total number of 24 households’ latrine was installed for the poor in project area of Lohalia, Potuakhali and Kuripika of Potuakhali district benefitiing 120 people directly. Awareness of the health related issues was brought to 2500 people through training sessions, printings, and distributions of educational material. ECHO hopes to bring clean water to more districts. ECHO has decided to undertake New Project on “Total Sanitation” for schools installing connected toilets and running water supply to improve schools’ infra-structure. ECHO is continuing to help on providing material or logistical assistance on humanitarian purposes, typically in response to humanitarian crises including natural disaster and man-made disaster. Education as a core value of ECHO led to the reconstruction of B G Union ACADEMY and Monohorpur High School benefiting 3,000 students. This school was devasted by Cyclone along with lots of roads, and facilities damaged in southern districts of Bangladesh. In 2013 building collapse caused horrible tragedy that had taken the lives of 300+ poor Garments workers in Bangladesh. Echo worked with partner to help surviving victims and affected families. Bangladesh was in severest grip of shivering cold in 2012-2013 with temperature as low as 3 degree Celsius in north and west region in the country. Echo reached out to work on sending blanket and warm clothes for people in need. ORPHANAGE: 1 out of 15 children born in Bangladesh end up on the streets, making the orphanage project vital to the welfare of the Bangladesh. In 2011 ECHO, in partnership with The Givelight Foundation, and a generous donation of land by a Bangladeshi family, laid the foundation for the 50 girl orphanage in Dhaka. Few Objectives of this project are to ensure survival, protection and healthy development of the orphans and assist in their studies and skills development for a better future. Currently orphanage selectin procedure is underway. The orphanage site is now at its final stage.  Challenges: Reaching the 2015 completion date. ECHO is continuously looking for making a bigger impact at the life of needy and society, that where social entrepreneurship effort started. because it creates social programs that are meant to be self-sustaining. Social entrepreneurship uses its funds to make a lasting social impact, creating instructional programs that teach the poor how to grow their own food so that they can take care of themselves in the long run. Currently ECHO is looking at different options on social entrepreneurship and going thru applications from different candidates. New Projects WASH: WATER AND SANITATION HYGIENE: Total Sanitation for Schools Although there are lots of schools run by Bangladesh Government, the infrastructure of these schools are not made with good sanitation and pure drinking water supply especially for the girl students. ECHO has undertaken now projects on what it calls “Total Sanitation for Schools” where connected sanitary system with toilets and running water will be installed.
