Mission Statement
Mission: Prevent homelessness. Promote Self-Sufficiency and Dignity.
About This Cause
In June 2003, in the 70805 zip code, one of the nation's most poverty-stricken and crime-ridden communities, two existing organizations merged to combine resources and strengthen the capacity to serve thousands of people throughout the Baton Rouge (BR) area. HOPE has served this community for nineteen years with effective, innovative, mission-focused programs. In 2023, HOPE will host a year-long 20 Years of HOPE celebration. HOPE serves with twenty current employees, roughly 150 volunteers, and eleven board members. HOPE accomplishes its mission through two programs: HOPE’s Client Choice Food Pantry (CCFP) and The Way to Work Sustainable Workforce SOLUTIONS© (TWTW). HOPE’s CCFP serves those struggling with food insecurity. A multi-year average of 1,000 unduplicated households (3,750 individuals) shop in the CCFP annually. These clients receive supplemental food while alleviating pressure from family budgets for other essential needs such as rent, utilities, or medication. Those in the community raised in generational poverty face many barriers to maintaining sustainable employment, contributing to an environment of failure and public assistance. The Way to Work (TWTW), HOPE’s workforce development program, breaks down barriers using proven methods of teaching essential workforce skills and educating the broader community on creating an environment of success for all. TWTW program also provides wrap-around services for individuals and corporations struggling with retention. In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022, TWTW served 640 community and corporate participants that received instruction and coaching toward self-sufficiency. Coaching services include: budgeting and financial literacy; career coaching, including goal-setting, career planning, resume building, and interview skills; and success planning, balancing work and home life. Going Beyond is a two-week class that teaches the sixteen essential skills that employers have identified as the areas that keep low-moderate income clients from success in the workplace. TWTW partners with the business community and other nonprofits to add a career development component to refer clients to hard-skills job training partners and employers of choice. In 2023, HOPE/The Way to Work celebrates 20 Years of HOPE with events all year long. In February, HOPE's past and present board members came together for a brunch and recognition of their legacy in the community. On May 2nd, HOPE's Client Choice Food Pantry will host its second Iron Chef competition. Throughout the spring and summer, HOPE's media partner, WAFB, will film a series called "Essential Jobs of Baton Rouge." Local celebrities and business leaders will spend a day doing an essential job with cameras rolling. The series will air in August and September of 2023. The celebration will culminate in an anniversary gala on October 19th. Celebrate 20 Years of HOPE with us!
