Mission Statement
We are a force for good, turning young lives around and setting their course for an empowered future. We are a turning point for youth.
About This Cause
Pivot serves young people lacking stability in the greater Oklahoma County area. They are homeless, couch homeless, alone, disengaged, living without parental support, aged out of the foster care system, or are involved in or have experienced involvement with the child welfare or the juvenile justice systems. Our youth are ages 12 to 24 years who face devastating barriers and have very few resources (if any) to transition into self-reliant adults. Pivot is trauma-informed and trauma-responsive. We provide services that address basic needs like housing, education, employment, permanent connections, and well-being. Research shows that youth increase their likelihood of remaining in school, graduating high school, pursuing higher education or vocational training, and becoming productive citizens by addressing these five domains. Pivot uses case management tools for personalized, integrated service plans and hands-on skill development activities to help youth develop educational, job, and life skills to support self-sufficiency. We serve youth who often deny their circumstances and find it difficult to trust adults/authority figures. To address this challenge, Pivot's team continues to do community outreach and build trust and connection with youth in our community. Pivot has 53 years of experience working with homeless youth. Regardless of how a young person comes to us, we address the four domains of basic needs and housing, education and employment, permanent connections, and well-being. Research shows that by addressing these four domains, youth increase their likelihood of remaining in school, graduating high school, pursuing higher education or vocational training, and becoming productive members of society. The organization's core strengths lie in its longevity, its ability to provide wrap-around services to youth and families in need, and its ability to adapt to the changing needs of the young people we serve. In addition, our licensed therapists, case managers, youth advocates, and mentors have decades of combined experience working with young people who are often overlooked in our community. Education and employment are necessary to give adolescents the best chance to transition into adulthood successfully. Across all Pivot programs, part of each young person's experience includes the opportunity to have basic needs met, graduate from high school, apply for college or vocational school, build job readiness and job search skills, maintain employment, and gain vital life skills. Pivot fulfills a unique niche in our community because no other organization offers our complete services for adolescents and young adults and their families. Our subject matter experts and therapists are in-house staff, providing excellent continuity of care. In addition, we provide opportunities for young people to practice what they learn through life skills education and counseling, ensuring they develop the necessary skills to grow into self-sustained adulthood. We know that successfully transitioning into adulthood not only hinges on social and emotional well-being but also requires the knowledge and skills essential for living independently. Our goal is to accompany each young person on their journey to adulthood, ensuring they have the chance to discover they are more than their current circumstance and are capable and can change their lives for the better. Our licensed therapists address many issues like abuse/trauma, depression/anxiety, grief, substance abuse, adverse childhood experiences, gang involvement, or criminal behavior. In addition, a significant percentage of the youth we serve are LGBTQ+ and need connection and belonging. While addressing outside barriers our kids face is essential, their likelihood of success diminishes if we do not address the inner strongholds. At Pivot, we move youth from a life of fear and instability to one of hope and opportunity. Our programs include Teen Resource Center – A resource center to help youth get connected and get help. They focus on connecting youth to mental health hotlines, sexual education and consent, healthcare access, enrollment in benefits, referrals to therapists and mediators, housing and food support, and employment and education access. The Point - A drop-in center and shelter open to youth ages 16-24 experiencing homelessness and needing resources. The Family Junction - Temporary housing for youth ages 12-17 in DHS custody who have run away or without parental support and who need a safe and secure place to live. The Tiny Home Community - A secure home to help youth transition to independent living. Community Intervention Center (CIC): We offer assistance to youth brought to us by law enforcement and connect them with needed services like food, clothing, housing, medical, counseling, or mentoring. Supporting Kids in Independent Living (SKIL): SKIL motivates youth to seek out educational and employment opportunities that give them a chance to transition into adulthood successfully. The Counseling Center - Pivot counseling services support youth and families as they navigate relationships, trauma, external factors, and more. Pivot Preserves – A new social enterprise to develop and market jams and jellies sold in select markets and holiday gift boxes to provide first-time jobs for homeless/aging out-of-care youth to gain experience and income and raise funds for supportive programming at Pivot, Inc. Youth will learn the necessary skills to be quality employees and explore careers in the business world.
