Mission Statement
Coffee Creek Riding Center has provided free therapeutic horsemanship classes to the disability community for the past 38 years. Serving 280 students a year with students coming from both special education classes from greater Okla City Metro Area and individual students brought by their parents.
About This Cause
By many miracles we have been able to provide the program FREE for the past 38 years for every child who has ridden. Coffee Creek was founded in 1977 as the fulfillment of a dream of Mrs. Lucille Fancey in partnership with her daughter Joy Milligan. It grew during the first year to a program serving 50 students and steadily grew to 140 students over the next couple years. The center has expanded to serving 280 students yearly with 180 in spring and fall semesters with (80 riding weekly) and 90 students in the summer. We built our 85 X 200 indoor arena in 1990 and the classroom complex in 1992. Coffee Creek serves 280 students from Edmond and the surrounding area. We serve both special education classes and individual students. Serving schools allows many children to participate who could not otherwise be able as parents cannot leave their work to bring them. . The program impacts the lives of students with a wide variety of disabilities in both the Edmond local community and surrounding Metro area. Therapeutic riding provides mental, physical and social benefits. Students benefit from an increase in strength and coordination that enhances their mobility and capabilities and self-image. We have had the joy of seeing nonverbal children begin to talk and some move from wheel chair to walker or canes to walking. Whether benefits are large and exciting or slow increments of growth we work along with all their other therapies to help them achieve their fullest potential. Because of the costs associated with a child with challenges parents share what a blessing it is for it to be free for their child. .We have about 190 adult and teen volunteers each year who assist the children during their classes. Many teens from Edmond volunteer and some have chosen medical, educational and therapeutic career fields through their work with Coffee Creek. We also several local colleges and universities who require their students to volunteer for their class requirements.
