Mission Statement

City Care was founded in 1996 and seeks to inspire those willing to look extreme poverty and social injustice in the face and empower them to do whatever it takes to create change. Through homeless services, permanent supportive housing, and character-based and literacy-focused tutoring, we witness remarkable stories of transformation.

About This Cause

City Care was founded over two decades ago when a few friends began offering a weekly breakfast to neighbors experiencing homelessness. Many shared similar stories of family trauma and difficulty finding success in school. From those interactions, the vision for our Whiz Kids program, a one-to-one mentoring and tutoring program for elementary school students, was born. Our goal is that the confidence built and literacy skills taught at Whiz Kids is a start to breaking the cycles of intergenerational poverty in families. Through this unique blend of nonprofits, schools, and churches working together, we serve hundreds of students weekly from 27 schools in nine districts across the Oklahoma City metro. While mentorship is a key component of a child’s success in school, we know that the home is the heartbeat of any family. It should be a sanctuary, a place to put down roots and experience deep rest and healing. However, for many in our community, the combination of job loss, illness, substance use disorder, domestic violence, or lack of relational margin has made finding a stable home out of reach. That is why, for over twenty years, City Care has been investing in the Westlawn Neighborhood of OKC through permanent supportive housing for those transitioning out of homelessness. Our residents live in peer-supported communities and are empowered to use their lived experiences to support others. Residents have access to case management advocates who help them remain stably housed by increasing life skills and rebuilding healthy support systems. For those in our city in the midst of a crisis and need of emergency shelter, we opened OKC’s only low-barrier night shelter in 2021. We focus our attention on the most vulnerable of our neighbors, those who are not accessing the other shelters in our city due to barriers such as not maintaining sobriety, lacking an ID or documentation, or an unwillingness to join a faith-based program. City Care provides respite from the elements for women, families, men, and their pets living on the streets with a clean bed, hot meal, and a safe environment. Our team of advocates work to connect our guests with the services they are looking for to move from crisis to stability using a housing-first model. At City Care, we believe everyone deserves access to safe shelter, no matter their circumstances or station in life. Each year, 50,000 beds are able to be utilized for those needing emergency shelter and 2,000 to 3,000 unduplicated individuals are served. Our message to our guests is simple, rest easy and know you belong here.
