Mission Statement

To strengthen the ability of people to work together for community change

About This Cause

According to the 2017 Central Oklahoma Vital Signs, "social capital refers to relationships and connections that build trust, create a sense of community and empower residents to work together for mutual benefit... engaged communities are more likely to have successful outcomes in areas of education, urban poverty, unemployment, crime, drug abuse and overall health." If we hope to solve our tough societal issues and create less need for direct services, building of a sense of community and connection, along with skill sets to act as agents of change with others, is critical. These are Possibilities specialties. Possibilities does not serve clients, but partners with program participants and their communities to affect change. Our success is dependent on the individuals in the program becoming a Possibilities leader. The neighborhoods, service organizations, houses of faith, schools and other businesses that they identify as their communities become partners as PIP alumni engage others in their efforts to improve communities. PIP alumni represent 171 communities, including 60 neighborhoods, 67 organizations, community groups and houses of faith, and 44 schools. PIP 18-19 includes representatives from Boys & Girls Club, Bridgeway Church, Calm Waters, Circle of Care, Elegant Life Foundation, God Time Church, Lincoln Park Senior Center, McFarland Methodist Church, Midtown Farm, Oakcliff Neighborhood, OAHNI, OKC Educare, North Highland Elementary, Santa Fe High School, Shrilling Community Center, The Spero Project, St. John Episcopal Church, Trinity Missionary Baptist, and Wildwood Christian Church. Possibilities core program is Possibilities Innovation Program (PIP). The goals of PIP include 1) Build a Possibilities Leader, 2) Improve Individual Well-Being and 3) Possibilities Leaders Work for Community Change. PIP is a leadership and community development program that takes place over an initial year working intensively with 20-40 participants who want to build their skills to impact their own lives and their communities. The program includes group training sessions, individualized goals for growth established through coaching sessions, practice along the way, regular networking opportunities with OKC leaders, and 3-5 community projects planned and implemented by participants as they learn project steps that are designed to be replicated. During the community project phase of the program, participants' communities are engaged. Progress continues at the community level after the initial year as PIP alumni are extensions of Possibilities staff who work to improve communities through civic participation and improvement projects. Possibilities adapted the proven participatory capacity building methodology developed by World Neighbors for use in an urban environment. Possibilities has been recognized as a model program by Tufts University and was a 2009 ONE Award finalist of the OK Center for Nonprofits. Most recently, methods have been presented at the 2018 International Transformative Learning Conference at Columbia University. Possibilities work was highlighted in an Eastern University paper on popular education (Boyd, 2011) and was honored as the 2019 Multicultural Organization of the Year award from the Multicultural Education Institute at UCO.
