Mission Statement
The Portland Animal Welfare (PAW) Team saves lives, alleviates suffering, and keeps pets and people together by providing free veterinary care to the pets of people who are experiencing houselessness or extreme poverty.
About This Cause
PAW Team was created in the late 1990s by a grassroots group of Portland-area veterinarians who came together to provide critically needed veterinary care to the pets of people living on the streets. Over the past two decades, PAW Team has grown from providing basic wellness exams at makeshift clinics on street corners and in church basements to a comprehensive approach to care in our fully accessible permanent clinic facility, where we seek to provide the highest level of service possible for animals and their people in our community. PAW Team provides vital services for over 1,800 pets from 1,000 Portland-area families per year, aiding individuals living on the streets, in transitional shelters or government housing, as well as those facing temporary financial limitations that restrict their ability to obtain medical care for their pets. For many of our clients, home is where their beloved companion animal is, and they depend on their pets to provide love, comfort, companionship, security and a reason to regain health and stability. Access to these essential services plays an integral role in keeping pets happy and health and with the people that love them the most. PAW Team provides regular, ongoing veterinary care through a volunteer-powered medical program including weekday appointments, weekend drop-in clinics, and offsite outreach. PAW Team also maintains a 100% donated supply bank, providing community members with essentials including parasite prevention, food, coats, toys, and other pet essentials. Honoring the healing power of the mutually beneficial human-animal bond, PAW Team has been responsible for enhancing and saving the lives of thousands of cherished companion animals.
