Mission Statement
CASA is an independent, nonprofit creative arts after school program located in San Francisco. We are dedicated to guiding youth toward open expression, expansive hearts, and questioning minds. We provide a safe and inspiring environment in which children receive visual and performing arts instruction infused with social justice themes. At CASA, children are free to be themselves within a structured arts curriculum. Our students graduate with a love for the arts, but more importantly, they each leave us with a drive to be a better human being.
About This Cause
CASA (Children's After School Arts) is a unique, independent after school program serving SF youth in kindergarten through middle school. CASA kids are treated to classes in a wide variety of artistic disciplines led by our team of talented teachers. Classes include: creative engineering, drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, acting, improvisation, playwriting, cabaret, songwriting, breakdancing, and more! Our teaching team reflects the diversity of our city and represents a myriad of gender identities and ethnicities. In committing to a diverse family of artist/educators, our students have the opportunity to see themselves reflected in our staff, and also to make positive connections with teachers who have different cultural backgrounds. All of our teachers infuse their curriculum and daily student interactions with social justice themes. Each year, CASA’s Spring Musical provides a unique opportunity to 200 kindergarten through 5th graders. Working with each individual child, CASA finds a place for everyone to participate in this incredible ensemble production. Each graduating 5th grader creates their own character and then portrays them in an original musical on a professional stage. CASA musicals take kids on an adventurous journey of self-discovery culminating in a lively celebration of individuality and experiential development. Every year, the musical explores a different theme of interest to our students. Last year our theme was SAN FRANCISCO. The CASA kids dove into San Francisco history while also exploring The City’s rapid change, focusing on issues of gentrification, displacement and identity. The script was developed through a series of improvisations and writing exercises with the CASA kids. The result, City Not For Sale garnered much media attention, including a story on NPR’s This American Life!
