Mission Statement
Sunshine Cottage promotes early identification and intervention of hearing loss and provides a rich learning environment so that children with hearing loss can develop through listening, language and speech.
About This Cause
In 1947 John and Dela White had a dream their young daughter who was born profoundly deaf and other children like her would be able to succeed in a hearing world and today we are able to see the fruits of her vision. When the doors to Sunshine Cottage first opened, there were seven students. Today, 675 children and families are served annually. The Newborn Hearing Evaluation Center provided over 400 unduplicated tests to children aged birth to age 5. The Parent Infant Program enrolled 183 families in their program. The day-school program educated another 145 children aged three through fifth grade. These lives were touched by the 93 full-time Sunshine Cottage employees and 240 volunteers. In addition to the direct services accomplishments, Sunshine Cottage promotes the professional development of deaf educators in the community, state, nation and even internationally by providing webinars and seminars on best practices on educating children with hearing loss.
