Mission Statement

At The Settlement Home for Children (The Home), we believe that when we support all children as a community, together we can create a healthier future for Texas. Located in Austin, The Home is a licensed nonprofit organization that serves individuals who have experienced severe emotional trauma, abuse and neglect. We provide 24-hour care to help children in foster care access the materials and support they need to restore and preserve a permanent sense of well-being. Our mission is to promote healing and growth in children, young adults and families by providing a continuum of care, support and resources. Each of our programs builds a foundation for children so that they can develop a set of skills and beliefs that lead to self-efficacy. The support we provide includes taking care of children's therapeutic counseling, emotional needs and physical health, providing nourishing meals and recreational activities, helping them develop healthy relationships and supporting their academic growth. Child well-being is strengthened over time with resources like a safe, structured, caring environment and by teaching the life skills that allow individuals to live healthy, productive lives.

About This Cause

Our Residential Treatment Center (RTC) provides 27 beds for girls and young women ages 11-21 in a highly structured environment with 24-hour therapeutic support. Our Group Home Program (GHP) provides 22 beds for girls and women ages 11-21 in a home-like setting with 24-hour therapeutic support. Our Transitional Living Program (TLP) provides 11 efficiency apartments for young women 18 and older who are not quite prepared to live on their own and choose to remain in the custody of Child Protective Services through an extended foster care agreement. The residents receive case management and therapy and build independent skills. Our Aftercare Coordinator supports residents and former residents in preparing for increased self-sufficiency as well as education and professional success. We consummated 11 adoptions in 2018 and served 63 children through our Foster & Adoption Program. In 2018, we were able to provide 91 percent of the children in the program with "positive permanency," which means they moved to a permanent home with a relative, a friend of the family or to an adoptive family. Our on-campus University of Texas Charter School serves between 35 and 45 students each day from sixth through 12th grades. This number fluctuates with admissions and discharges in our RTC and GHP. Over the course of the year, we serve between 70 and 80 students.
