Mental Health America (MHA) of Greater Houston works to enhance the mental health of all individuals living in the Greater Houston Region and improve the lives of those living with mental illness.
About This Cause
Mental Health America (MHA) of Greater Houston drives community solutions to promote mental health for all. Our vision is a future of hope and understanding that promotes the health and well-being of all people. The agency accomplishes this through education, collective impact, as well as advocating for the implementation of best practices and sound public policies. Founded in 1954 by Ima Hogg, we are the longest serving mental health organization in our region. Our evolution during the past 60+ years mirrors the advances in mental health research and reflects the changes in the community in terms of challenges faced by people living with a mental illness, as well as the need to decrease the ever increasing demand for mental health services for those illnesses and disorders that can be prevented through a systemic and lifespan approach to mental wellness. The impact of our work is seen not only in the betterment of the mental health system, but in the enhancement of the health and human services sector as a whole, by: *Enhancing the community’s capacity to prevent and address mental illness and behavioral health disorders among vulnerable segments of the population going through specific periods in their lifespan that make them particularly vulnerable to developing life-altering mental illnesses. These segments of the population are veterans during their community reintegration process, children during their K-12 school years, and mothers during their perinatal period. *Helping implement best practices in the provision of mental and behavioral health services to enhance the quality of services and the population health outcomes that those services are yielding. This work is mainly done through advancing the practice of integrated health care within the health and human services sector.
