Mission Statement
The Women's Home builds communities that strengthen women and support families as they regain their stability.
About This Cause
In 1957, The Women’s Home was founded to help women who were homeless due to mental illness and/or addiction as there were few services available for them at that time. We continue this work at our Montrose campus with our Residential Treatment Program for women who are homeless due to mental health and/or substance abuse disorders, especially targeting those with co-occurring disorders. We provide residential care and evidenced-based treatment to help our clients learn how to manage their mental illness, maintain their sobriety and build whole lives. With 61 years of providing programs to the Houston community, The Women’s Home has learned that helping a woman is a reciprocal endeavor because it strengthens her family. Similarly, when we a help a family, we strengthen a woman. This core belief led to our expansion to serve more women and families. In 2010, we opened our Jane Cizik Garden Place, which is a permanent supportive housing complex in Spring Branch where individuals can live independently with the support of on-site case management and supportive services. In 2016, The Women’s Home completed a three-year, $27 million capital campaign to develop a unique, affordable community where local women and families can thrive. In 2016, we opened our Adele and Ber Pieper Family Place housing complex that provides permanent supportive housing to low-income families who have experienced homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness. On-site case managers help our tenants locate services they need to maintain housing and increase their stability and upward mobility. In November of 2017, we completed our expansion with the opening of our Mabee WholeLife® Service Center (WLSC) in Spring Branch, which is located within several blocks of our two housing complexes. We developed the WholeLife® Collaborative, a coalition of social service agencies that is working collectively to offer services at the WLSC. The Women’s Home is serving as the backbone organization for the collaborative, and we oversee management, facilitation, data collection and dissemination for the entire project. We also provide direct behavioral health care services alongside our partners, and we utilize the Appreciative Community Building methodology to ensure our services are responsive to local needs.
