Mission Statement

A not-for-profit organization founded in 1946, The Houston Golf Association (HGA) exists to make a difference in the Houston community, and its youth, through golf and charity. The HGA has a proud record of using golf to enrich the lives of children, youth, and adults through its educational and charitable endeavors. The three major operations under the HGA organization’s umbrella are: The First Tee of Greater Houston, Houston Municipal Golf and Junior Golf.

About This Cause

We are actively raising charitable funds to support the success of The First Tee of Greater Houston which is the largest chapter in the country out of over 150. The First Tee of Greater Houston is now in 30 districts and 488 schools. In 2017, we served over 346,277 kids. Our program is rooted in The First Tee Nine Core Values of: Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy and Judgment. To address physical, emotional and social aspects, we also incorporate these Nine Healthy Habits: Energy, Play, Safety, Vision, Mind, Family, Friends, School and Community. Positive adult role models teach age and developmentally appropriate core values and health and wellness behaviors at each level of the curriculum. Broad community support is critical in allowing us to provide young people and their families with this program that utilizes mentoring to foster character building, educational life skills and wellness through the fun and engaging platform of golf! "Preserving the Past, Defining the Future" is a special historical preservation project that closely links HGA’s Municipal Golf initiative with The First Tee. The Campaign to Restore Gus Wortham Park Golf Course is core to HGA’s purpose to ensure quality golf is accessible and, to offer mentoring and character building programming for under-served youth. We are more than half-way to our $12 million campaign to restore the oldest continuously played 18-hole golf course in the state of Texas through a public-private partnership with the City of Houston. This campaign to restore Gus Wortham Park Golf Course benefits the Greater Houston community by enhancing quality of life for residents with a best-in-class recreational amenity to be enjoyed by all. This project will stimulate economic development in the East End, while providing expanded educational opportunities for local area youth through programming by The First Tee of Greater Houston. It also encompasses improved access to a beautiful green space, important historic preservation, a facility that can accommodate civic, cultural, and social gatherings of up to 150 individuals (with a full kitchen), and a classroom and outdoor practice area for students 7-18 years of age. A 12-member volunteer board governs HGA. Our board is behind the HGA’s plans to continue expanding The First Tee to be in every school throughout Greater Houston by 2020. The HGA board is also engaged and passionate about our Municipal Golf initiative which has a long-term goal of HGA operating every municipal golf course in Houston .
