ANTONIAN COLLEGE PREPARATORY HIGH SCHOOL

San Antonio, Texas, 78213 United States

Mission Statement

Antonian was established in 1964 by the Archdiocese of San Antonio with the support of the pastors from twelve northside parishes and was originally staffed by the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Antonian retains many of the innovated practices attributed to St. John Baptiste De La Salle including the integration of religious instruction with academic subjects, well-prepared teachers with a sense of vocation and mission, and the involvement of parents. Originally a school for boys Antonian transitioned to being a co-educational school in 1989. Preparing students academically, socially, and emotionally for higher education and life demands an environment that is reflective of the real world. The real world is comprised of men and women, and Antonian graduates are prepared to interact and work with members of the opposite sex both in college and classrooms and in the workplace. This Antonian Dynamic empowers students to grow as both individuals and members of the community.

About This Cause

Antonian was established in 1964 by the Archdiocese of San Antonio with the support of pastors from twelve northside parishes. Originally staffed by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Antonian retains many of the innovative practices attributed to St. John Baptiste De La Salle, including the integration of religious instruction with academic subjects, well-prepared teachers with a sense of vocation and mission, and the involvement and partnership of parents. Built as a school for boys, Antonian transitioned to being a co-educational school in 1989. Today, Antonian is the largest Catholic high school in San Antonio with enrollment that averages 730 students from 83 parishes and 66 middle schools with tuition and fees among the lowest of San Antonio Catholic high schools. As a private school, Antonian does not receive any state or federal funding, and only limited funding from the Archdiocese Hope for the Future restricted to tuition assistance. Operational needs, program enhancement, routine maintenance and campus improvements are funded through tuition and additional contributions from parents, alumni and friends of Antonian. Antonian is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Texas Catholic Conference Education Department (TCCED). Our students’ achievements are many as they continue to not only break standards but also contribute to the world around us. The Catholic High School Honor Roll has recognized Antonian as one of the top 50 Catholic high schools in the United States. Antonian has won the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) district academic meet 4 times. In 2010-2011 and 2011-2012, Antonian was awarded the TAPPS Henderson Champion Cup as the best overall 5A school (includes academics, athletics, and arts). Each year the Antonian graduating class achieves 100% college acceptance rate, many into top ranking universities. Antonian SAT/ACT composite scores exceed state and national averages. In partnership with St. Mary’s University and UTSA, Antonian offers juniors and seniors the opportunity to earn high school and college credit hours simultaneously. Antonian employs 49 teaching faculty and 19 staff members as well as several non-teaching extracurricular coaches and moderators. The average class size is 25 students with a student to teacher ratio of 15:1. Antonian’s student body is 62% Hispanic; 30% Caucasian; 3% Asian; 4% African American; 1% Native American with a religious composition of 88% Catholic and 12% other faiths. At Antonian, we proclaim the motto: “College is difficult; so is life. We prepare you for both.” Antonian strives to help students acquire the knowledge that not only prepares them in college-readiness but also places that knowledge within the context of helping make the world a better place. At Antonian, we value the soul of the individual and work to cultivate an environment where each student is nourished in mind, body, spirit, and imagination. Fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement is a shared goal of administration, faculty, and students. We understand that each student brings a unique quality that enhances our community. We are committed to addressing the needs of students requiring alternative learning resources through our Crane Family Learning Center and fostering the spiritual growth of all students through our Campus Ministry program. Students are required to take Theology classes each year they attend Antonian, and as a requirement for graduation, students are expected to complete a minimum of one-hundred (100) hours of community service over their four years at Antonian. Additionally, as a complement to athletic and academic opportunities, Antonian hosts over 35 extracurricular programs that provide opportunities to develop character and leadership skills. Some of the most popular are IHS Antonian Retreats, African Awareness Club, Ambassadors, Chemistry Club, Drama Society, Environmental club, Latin/Spanish Clubs, Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, Robotics, and Student Council. Antonian’s full range of athletic pursuits provide our student an opportunity to compete and be successful against other schools, both public and private, while instilling the concept of teamwork and work ethic that improves an individual’s well-being and prowess. Over the past 5 years, Antonian has had 57 athletes commit to continue athletics at the collegiate level. Over the 50 years of existence, Antonian has won 46 state championships. It has always been our belief that the cost of tuition should not prohibit families from choosing to enroll their child in the Catholic High School of their choice. The median income of Antonian families is $65,000. Many of our students reside in distressed areas of San Antonio with families who struggle to make ends meet. An established Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) offers a resource to parents who are desperate to have their children have the excellent Catholic education Antonian offers but who may need some financial assistance. Of the 730 enrolled students, approximately 20% apply for tuition assistance each year. With tuition currently at $9,800 a year, Antonian has one of the lowest tuition rates of premier San Antonio private high schools. Enrollment numbers are consistent, and we continue to draw close to three hundred middle school students who take the High School Placement Test and seek admission to Antonian. These students come primarily from Catholic middle schools, and often a family may have two or more children enrolled in a private school at various grade levels. Antonian strives to stay competitive in alternative markets by offering tuition assistance to financially challenged families who seek the experience Antonian has to offer their children but do not have the resources to pay the full tuition. These families recognize the benefit of the Antonian charisma that sets forth the formation of the spiritual, moral, intellectual, and social dimensions of Christian discipleship. Additionally, each year Antonian receives requests from families with enrolled students whose financial situation has changed for a variety of reasons. These families are still very committed to having their children attend Antonian, but due to an unforeseen crisis and economic hardship, they no longer have the resources to meet the financial obligation. Antonian seeks to help meet that immediate need through a tuition assistance grant. Economic hardship is defined as a reduction of a substantial amount of the family’s income due to job loss, accident, health issue, death or any similar event. Often the family has more than one child enrolled at a parochial or inter-parochial Catholic school and may need some help to meet the financial commitment. Our goal is to enroll aspiring students who bring together those characteristics that consist of a desire to be an active part of the Antonian community; a potential for developing leadership skills; who are academically motivated; and who possesses a yearning to come to know their faith and live the Gospel message. At Antonian, we value the spirit of the individual and work to cultivate an environment where each student is nourished in mind, body, spirit and imagination.
