Mission Statement
Since 1971, the Citizens’ Environmental Coalition (CEC) has worked to foster dialogue, education, and collaboration on environmental issues in the Houston/Gulf Coast Region.
About This Cause
The CEC works to connect the environmental community through contributions to engagement and education programs, creation of prominent local publications, distribution of environmental resources, and hosting of signature community events. CEC’s work aims to connect the entire Greater Houston community to environmental issues and to the experts working on combating these issues in the region. Opportunities are created to introduce the public to issues that they may not know affect them, provide access to careers and advocacy opportunities that may not otherwise be available, and to foster a sense of wonder and appreciation for our local natural resources. Among CEC’s signature programs are the Earth Day Houston celebration in partnership with the Discovery Green Conservancy, the Wild About Houston Green Film Festival, the Greater Houston Environmental Summit, and the highly regarded weekly e-newsletter. This newsletter reaches nearly 5,000 subscribers and includes a comprehensive list of local resources, including all of the environmental events and green jobs available across the region. Other notable recent projects include environmental education programs catering to underserved neighborhoods, environmental candidate forums, and climate change community listening sessions with follow up opportunities for advocacy. Made up of approximately 150 members, the CEC is proud to represent a diverse group of nonprofit organizations, governmental bodies, and concerned community members. While CEC and its member organizations serve the entire Houston region, much of the work is focused on supporting underserved communities near the industrialized areas surrounding the Houston Ship Channel.
