Mission Statement
Meals on Wheels SA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization serving senior residents of Bexar, and South Central Texas since 1977. Today, the mission of enabling seniors to maintain their dignity and independence is accomplished through five programs: Meals on Wheels, Grace Place Alzheimer's Activity Centers, Friendly Visitors, Animeals, Comfy Casas and Grace Notes. Through these programs, Meals on Wheels is the largest provider of services to seniors in Bexar County. Each year, we serve over 5,500 seniors by providing essential nutrition, companionship, and Alzheimer's care.
About This Cause
Meals on Wheels provides nearly 1 million meals annually. Not only do these meals help seniors meet essential nutritional requirements, they also serve as a means to promote the dignity and independence of the homebound seniors who are often times nutritionally at risk due to frailty, disability, or dementia and do not have other means of securing healthy meals. Grace Place serves clients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia and their caregivers in Bexar County. In order to be admitted into the program, clients must have a physician’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Clients must also be ambulatory (or able to transfer independently from wheelchair to chair), continent, and able to feed themselves. Although GP services are subsidized and economical, we recognize that some families cannot afford the economical cost of $34 per day. Scholarships are offered to these clients on a case-by-case basis. Clients who receive scholarships are low-income and the most in need. Grace Place is currently closed due to COVID-19, with plans to reopen this year. The Friendly Visitor Program is a volunteer-based program where the goal is to provide companionship and a meaningful friendship to a homebound citizen in Bexar County. Friendly Visitors are matched with a homebound senior based on personality/interests and scheduling needs. Due to current health concerns for our senior neighbors and volunteers, this position is moving from in-home meetings to phone calls. Once pandemic health concerns subside, the in-person visitations will resume. This program is great for individuals who possess the gift of gab and would love to spend some free time chatting with a person who needs a friend. Too often, seniors who are no longer able to leave their homes can start to feel isolated, lonely, and depressed, which may worsen existing health conditions. Friendly Visitor volunteers help to alleviate concerns by chatting with a homebound senior to provide much needed companionship. Just a simple conversation can make all the difference to lonely person. AniMeals is a donation-sustained service, which provides monthly deliveries of pet food to clients who find it hard to maintain the nutrition of their companion animals. These meals are delivered by animal-loving volunteers every third weekend of the month. Each month we distribute over 5,000lbs of cat and dog food to our clients. Other services include Pet transportation to vet services and pet care. We know sometime clients are unable to care for their pets for various reasons, so our volunteers care for these pets for a set period of time as needed by the client. Comfy Casas Program improves the health of clients by addressing living conditions which is a critical social determinant of health. Client referrals come from intake assessment coordinators, volunteers and paid delivery drivers whose regular visits enable the identification of home safety needs. Homeowners must live in Bexar County. The program manager conducts an initial walk-through, discussing needed repairs with the client. Projects beyond the scope of the program are referred to other organizations. Right now, help is needed to to assist seniors with recovery from the recent winter storm. We have clients who still need plumbing assistance and essential repairs so they can have access to clean and safe water. Grace Notes Community Choir is an intergenerational choir for people living with dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, and other neurodegenerative disorders, and their care partners. Grace Notes is a supportive community drawn together by a love of singing, and of the connection that music brings to our lives. Our choir is led by Amy Standridge, MM, MT-BC, a Board Certified Music Therapist with a choral degree from The University of Texas at Austin. The choir meets every Friday on zoom from 10:30am-11:30am.
