Mission Statement
The Science and Engineering Fair of Houston (SEFH) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization, supervised by a board of directors and serves as one of the largest regional science fairs in the Southeast Gulf coast Texas region. SEFH is an academic program that attracts, retains and inspires students to become career minded about STEM fields and make key connections for workforce solutions.
About This Cause
Since 1958, SEFH provides a beneficial science education experience for junior and senior high school students across 23 counties (117 school districts). The educational program has ~1,000 students participate from 6-12th grade public, private, charter and homeschools that develop skills in observation, questioning, problem-solving, reasoning, and presenting their scientific research in 18 categories, a technical writing contest and poster competition. SEFH connects young talent with industry to strengthen the STEM career pipeline and provide feedback to inspire students to pursue STEM fields. SEFH receives widespread support from over 500 scientists and engineers, the organizations they work for, professional societies and foundations who support meaningful educational activities. SEFH also obtains expert assistance from university faculty and STEM based student organizations who provide a glance ahead into college STEM degree programs. Since SEFH is located in Houston which is the 4th largest and 6th best city for diversity in the country according to a study conducted by SmartAsset, it serves as a business conduit that matches and highlights scientific aptitude of students to appropriate entities that are aligned to industry research and career expectations. Houston’s STEM talent base is extensive and exceptionally diverse such that 21% are Asian, 14% African American, 15% Hispanic, and 27% women. The ever-present need to ensure that under resourced students have the opportunity to attend SEFH continues to guide our leadership compass in providing mentorship, materials, and STEM experiences that foster students’ interest in scientific research. Building the industry pipeline from cradle to gray is a key investment that embodies the quest to improve the quality of life for the student and participating stakeholders.
