Mission Statement
Children's Association for Maximum Potential (CAMP) strengthens and inspires individuals with disabilities - and those who care for them - through Recreation, Respite, and Education.
About This Cause
Since 1979, CAMP has been providing recreational programming for children and adults with developmental, intellectual, medical, behavioral, and physical disabilities. We believe that “CAMP is for the camper” and our goal is to help every camper reach their maximum potential. CAMP is a 501(c)3, nonprofit organization founded by three Air Force pediatricians who wanted to provide a traditional camping experience for children who did not qualify to attend other camps, even "special needs camps", due to the severity of their disability of medical condition. CAMP provides both summer and school-year programming for individuals with disabilities aged 5-50 years. The summer program consists of nine distinct one-week residential sessions at our 55-acre, 400-bed capacity camp in the Texas Hill Country, called Camp CAMP, and the school-year program includes monthly Parent’s Night Out, Teen and Adult Day Adventure, and Respite Weekend Camp. CAMP also offers four Family Retreats annually, giving families caring for a family member with disabilities the opportunity to experience CAMP together. Through CAMP’s year-round programs, individuals with disabilities participate in medically safe recreational programs adapted to meet the individual needs of each camper. CAMP's programming fosters independence, self-confidence, encouragement, and self-efficacy. Parents and caregivers receive respite from their year-round caregiving responsibilities, having an opportunity to relax, reconnect, and focus on their own self-care. Teen volunteers receive critical hands-on educational opportunities, and health care professionals meet the medical needs of all campers and volunteers, while providing them with a more in-depth understanding of the day-to-day challenges, accomplishments, and care needs that our campers and their families face. Our 1:1 camper-to-counselor ratio and volunteer medical staff are key to providing a safe and fun-filled experience for individuals with medical, physical, intellectual, or developmental disabilities. No other camping program in South Texas has taken the radical and unique steps to meet the daily physical, medical, emotional, and social needs of this population. At CAMP, no one is turned away due to the severity of their disability or medical condition, or their family’s inability to pay the camping fees.
