Mission Statement
For over 40 years, Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas (VLS) has worked tirelessly to improve access to the civil justice system. Our vision – poverty is not a barrier to justice – fuels our two-fold mission: 1) to match Central Texans in need with attorneys who provide free civil legal services and 2) to recruit, train, and support a robust network of pro bono volunteers.
About This Cause
In 1981, a passionate group of lawyers founded VLS to ensure that the most vulnerable members of our community – those struggling to meet such basic needs as safety, security, shelter, education, and health - had somewhere to turn for legal help. Offered year-round, our access-to-justice programs in Travis, Hays, and Bastrop County include legal advice clinics, direct representation, and pro se legal assistance. All are provided free of charge to income-eligible clients – individuals and families living at or below 125% of federal poverty guidelines ($31,375 for a family of four), with discretion for those living at or below 187.5% ($47,063), such as victims of domestic violence. Dedicated attorney volunteers assist VLS clients with pressing matters, such as connecting disabled persons with medical and financial benefits, helping victims of abuse end violent relationships, and keeping people out of homelessness by defending against wrongful evictions and foreclosures. In 2017, VLS helped nearly 9,000 Central Texans and our volunteers donated close to 13,000 hours of free legal services - a value over $2,500,000 to the community.
