The mission of the Children's Museum of Houston is to transform communities through child-centered learning.
About This Cause
The Museum presents 13 bilingual exhibits that are aligned with state and national learning standards. Exhibits incorporate best museum practices and many were created with the support of national agencies, including the National Science Foundation and The National Institutes of Health. The Museum also provides an on-site circulating branch of the Houston Public Library branch, a year-long performing arts series, and facilitated activities. We provide facilitated experiments at our Science Station, nutrition experiments in our Power Science Lab, and in-depth engineering challenges in our Maker Annex. So that every visit affords new learning opportunities, the Museum presents WonderWeek programming that changes twice a month. Our free admission practices are the most inclusive of the nation's children's museums. 27% of our 800,000 annual Museum visitors receive free admission through programs that include Free Family Nights every Thursday evening, and Open Doors, which provide free admission passes to 918 social service partners that distribute the free passes to low-income families they serve. An additional 31% of visitors receive discounted admission. In addition to on-site programming, the Museum provides outreach at 430+ sites in low income communities free of charge to participants. Total outreach attendance of 445,600 was recorded in FY17. Programming includes parent engagement programs, Parent Stars and Para los Ninos, designed to help caregivers become more involved in their children's learning; and out-of-school programs including A'STEAM, Summer of Learning and Science Workshop which allow children to build skills and knowledge, emphasizing literacy and the practical application of the STEM disciplines that are required in the 21st century workplace. In FY17, we also provided professional development for 3,057 teachers and childcare providers, as well as a free, online curriculum database with instructions for 180+ activities that educators can facilitate in their classrooms.
