Mission Statement
The Legal Aid Foundation of Colorado promotes equal access to justice by raising funds to provide civil legal services for low-income people in the state of Colorado.
About This Cause
For the hundreds of Coloradans who are facing a life crisis of some sort on any given day, the most powerful and effective response often includes legal assistance. This is particularly true for low-income Coloradans, where civil legal problems can threaten their most basic needs and, left unresolved, can tear families apart and drive them further into poverty. Yet, in contrast to serious criminal matters, there is no guarantee of counsel in civil cases. The Legal Aid Foundation raises money for Colorado Legal Services, which is the only agency in the state that provides free legal services in civil cases to indigent clients in every Colorado county. Colorado Legal Services operates like a legal emergency room. In conducting its triage, it gives priority to the poor and elderly in greatest economic and social need and at greatest risk, focusing on legal issues that have an impact on basic needs, including at least minimally adequate income, food, shelter, utilities, necessary medical care, and freedom from domestic violence and abuse.
