About This Cause
Brighton was formed as a school for children with Down syndrome in 1969 and has evolved to meet the needs of children with various disabilities/delays. Brighton’s 200 staff members provide an early childhood preschool, home-based therapy, parent trainings, and individualized support for 4,000 children with disabilities/delays, focusing on birth to age 8, and their families. Ninety six percent have a disability or delay and 59% are from low- to moderate-income households. Both of Brighton’s locations (Higgins and Lullwood) serve children from throughout San Antonio. Brighton achieved the city's 4-Star certification, NAEYC accreditation, 2017 Large Nonprofit of the Year by the SA Business Journal, Best Places to Work by several organizations, and one of the 2022 Best Nonprofits to Work For by the NonProfit Times. Brighton serves children with some of the following special needs: developmental delay, sensory processing disorder, ADHD, speech disorder, Down Syndrome, Autism, 4p partial trisomy, Glass syndrome, TEFistula syndrome, legally blind, Prader-Willie Syndrome, Plagiocephaly, Neonatal Withdrawal symptoms, Cerebral Palsy, Encephalopathy, Cleft Palate, Congenital Malformation Syndrome, Brachial Plexus, Dystonia, Chromosome abnormality, Extremely Low Birth Weight, Epilepsy, Turner’s Syndrome, Microcephaly, to name a few. Brighton helps level the playing field for children with disabilities/delays by providing developmental and educational services for over 4,000 children, which increase developmental and educational skills and kindergarten readiness. Children with disabilities/delays benefit from Brighton’s programs, which entail: • Early Childhood Intervention (ECI): Brighton’s therapeutic intervention program, provided in-person or virtually, helps 2,600 children ages 0-3 reach their developmental potential. The program provides parent education to give caregivers the tools and strategies to help their children achieve their maximum developmental potential. • Pediatric Therapy Clinic (PTC): Brighton’s on-site Pediatric Therapy Clinic serves 75 children, ages 3 to 5, with disabilities/delays and their families with occupational, physical, speech and behavior therapies and includes parent observation and involvement, often providing multiple therapies occurring a few times each week. • Early Childhood Education (ECE): Provides an inclusive, kindergarten readiness preschool at 2 locations for 100 children ages 6 weeks to 5 years. The program is one of only a few childcare centers in the area that provide inclusive, individualized, and supplemental services to children with disabilities and at an affordable price. • Special Education Support Services (SESS): This program teaches 250 families of children with disabilities, with a focus on children ages 3-12, about Special Education Laws and how they can advocate for their child’s education. The program offers ongoing free classes and individualized services (based on a sliding fee scale) prior to and attendance during their Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) meeting with the school to assist parents with achieving ARD goals.
