Mission Statement

Disabled Resource Services empowers individuals of all ages and with all types of disabilities to achieve their maximum level of independence at home and in the community through setting and achieving goals, enhancing self-esteem, accessing resources, self-advocacy, peer support and education.

About This Cause

Personalized services fall into two broad categories, Case Management and Community Assistance. 1) Case Management Services assist people struggling to meet multiple, complex needs that prevent living as independently as possible. Independent Living Skills Training builds abilities through our Senior Vision Loss Program, budget counseling and assistive technology. Peer Support gives staff and volunteers opportunities to develop relationships with consumers by serving as positive role models and mentors because of shared disability experiences. Employment Assistance provides job counseling, work search and job placement that increase self-sufficiency. Advocacy brings change by improving conditions. It also includes our Social Security Disability Program. Housing Assistance includes managing Section 8 subsidized vouchers, making home modifications and transitioning people from nursing homes. Financial Assistance addresses emergency needs such as rental evictions, utility shut-offs, medication co-pays, transportation and equipment. Community Assistance Services helps people with disabilities find the resources needed to meet short-term, recurring or periodic needs so that they can continue daily activities. Information and Referral links people with resources and services that are often disability-specific. Volunteer Coordination arranges for help with occasional yard work, driving, moving and household chores. Equipment Loan Closet rents durable medical items for temporary use. Disability Awareness removes attitudinal barriers, eliminates discrimination and increases knowledge about disability related issues through public presentations. Case management is essential to the success of our service delivery process. Staff can lessen the fear of failing, the reality of despair and the sense of hopelessness that consume clients. Together, staff and clients assess pressing issues then identify appropriate services to resolve them. Staff share clients’ journeys by providing individualized support, encouragement and help. As a result, they stabilize more quickly and move forward with greater independence toward a better life. Our experienced staff are sensitive to client needs and are strong advocates. Their understandings about disabilities, because most of them also live with disabilities themselves, make our services unique. They have a wealth of expertise on social systems, bureaucracies and service agencies. Their knowledge about medical disorders and functional limitations allows them to quickly assess situations then rapidly move to service provision. They are skilled in locating funding sources. Their extensive understanding of resources fast-tracks clients to appropriate help without delay, especially when time is of the essence. This is important to people who are in crises and already compromised physically, mentally or emotionally. A one-stop location to arrange assistance and services can prevent needless running around to multiple agencies, reduce client stress levels and generate timely responses in meeting needs. To many who live with disabling conditions, daily tasks are so difficult that achieving independence may seem unreachable. When they fail to get the resources or develop the skills needed to manage the complexities imposed by disabilities and low incomes, they may lose control over their lives, become increasingly isolated and feel hopeless. People with disabilities face many challenges every day despite wanting to be independent—able to make choices and to direct their own lives. At DRS they find helpful solutions.
