Mission Statement
The mission of Communities In Schools of San Antonio (CIS-SA) is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Our program works by placing dedicated social service professionals within local schools to coordinate a system of support for disadvantaged youth. As a bridge between schools and the community, we collaborate with nonprofit agencies, businesses, and volunteers to deliver needed resources directly to students in school. Whether through counseling, career guidance, service-learning or the provision of basic needs, CIS-SA does whatever it takes to keep kids in school and on the path to graduation.
About This Cause
CIS-SA was founded in 1985 to address the alarming dropout crisis in Bexar County. With steadily increasing support at the local, state, and national levels, our program has expanded from 5 K-12 schools in San Antonio, to now serve 100+ campuses across Bexar and surrounding counties. Today, CIS-SA is the primary facilitator of school-based dropout prevention and intervention services in 12 school districts, with over 10,000 students receiving intensive support annually. An additional 40,000 students and families utilize CIS-SA for social service referrals, crisis intervention, school-wide events, and school supplies every year. The Communities In Schools model centers on the belief that all children need and deserve five Basic Life Tools for healthy development: 1. a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult 2. a safe place to learn and grow 3. a marketable skill to use upon graduation 4. a healthy start and a healthy future 5. a chance to give back to peers and community. Our commitment to these essentials guides the program design in every school. When children do not receive such basic support, they are more likely to struggle academically, drop out of school and face a lifetime of challenges. Our Site Coordinators work closely with students, families, and teachers to identify problems early and find appropriate and sustainable solutions. Collaboration is critical to the success of our program. Over the past 30 years, we have established strong relationships with hundreds of partner agencies and volunteers, leveraging community assets to avoid duplication of services and operate efficiently and cost-effectively. By integrating social services into the learning environment, CIS-SA helps to transform schools so that all children feel healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.
