Mission Statement

Prevent Child Abuse Utah (PCAU) has been in operation since 1982 providing child abuse prevention education and home visiting services. Our mission is to forge and guide a community commitment to prevent child abuse in all its forms, through prevention programs, services, public awareness, training and education, advocacy and networking.

About This Cause

The CDC has proclaimed that child abuse is a national medical emergency. Not only are four to five children killed every day, but the financial costs to our society are monumental and driving up medical expenses. The CDC estimates that the cost of the effects for child maltreatment in a single year is an estimated $80 billion dollars (2012), or an average cost of over $9 million dollars per hour. This conservative estimate includes the direct and indirect costs associated with the intervention and treatment of medical and emotional problems suffered by abused and neglected children. It also includes the costs associated with the long-term consequences of abuse and neglect, including criminal justice costs, lost worker productivity and long-term healthcare costs, which are elevated for victims of abuse. The cost of prevention is minimal compared to that of victim reparations, medical care, mental health therapy and court involvement. PCAU is committed to our mission to prevent child abuse by providing child abuse prevention education to children, teachers, parents, and other community members in the state of Utah. For more than 30 years, PCAU has worked with the Utah education system to provide school-based child abuse prevention programs. PCAU not only serves schools but also community, religious and civic groups and parents throughout the state of Utah with an array of child abuse prevention programs. The programs are audience appropriate, taught to community members of all socio-economic and income levels, and can be tailored to fit the needs and requirements of persons requesting the programs. Programs are free of cost. Programs include child abuse prevention, bullying prevention, Internet safety, healthy relationship awareness and quality parenting practices. Recipients of our child abuse prevention programs can use concepts learned to recognize and properly respond to child abuse, to increase parent-child communication and to promote disclosure. Our Parents as Teachers (PAT) program is comprehensive and covers critical areas of healthy parenting, especially those that parents may not have received from their own parents due to family unrest and dysfunction. Our Parent Educators visit parents in their homes at least once each month or up to four times each month, if a family demonstrates higher risk. Our Parent Educators provide education that serves to strengthen the bond between parent and child, helping parents invest more in their children’s health and well-being. Our Parent Educators provide developmentally-appropriate information according to the age of the child in the broad areas of: attachment, appropriate discipline, health, nutrition, safety, sleep and routines.
