Mission Statement
The Avow Foundation for Abortion Access is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to use education, training, organizing, and public policy to support and protect all Texans’ freedom to make personal reproductive health decisions and to guarantee access to the full range of options, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and accessing legal abortion. Program activities include research, public education, organizing, youth leadership, polling, and voter participation projects.
About This Cause
Avow Foundation for Abortion Access, formally the NARAL Pro-Choice Texas Foundation (also known as TARAL Education Fund) was founded in 1989, 11 years after the founding of its sister 501(c)(4) organization, NARAL Pro-Choice Texas, in 1978. Initially the organization focused on protecting the legal right to abortion. Avow Foundation for Abortion Access works to educate Texans on the importance of abortion access. Avow Foundation for Abortion Access programs include the Next Generation Program to develop pro-choice leaders from the millennial generation; work on Reducing Abortion Stigma and promoting culture change toward a society that supports all reproductive choices; and timely Policy Research and Education to educate Texans about public policy affecting access to reproductive healthcare in the state. There is an unmet need for education and outreach around reproductive rights and civic participation in our state. Of all U.S. states, Texas has the lowest rate of insured women and the second lowest rate of prenatal care access in the first trimester. Cuts to family planning and abortion restrictions are affecting access to reproductive healthcare, causing most harm to those who already experience socioeconomic hardship. Meanwhile, Texans are not participating in advocacy to protect their access to reproductive healthcare. The state ranks last in voter turnout and low on citizen contact with public officials.
