Mission Statement
An extraordinary education for dyslexic students. Rawson Saunders is the only full-curriculum school in central Texas for children with dyslexia.
About This Cause
Mission: To develop the full potential of children with dyslexia through an extraordinary educational experience. About Rawson Saunders School: Founded in 1997, Rawson Saunders is the only full-curriculum school in central Texas exclusively for students with dyslexia. Rawson Saunders combines rigorous, challenging curriculum with innovative, research-driven, multisensory instruction. Class sizes are small, allowing for optimal teacher engagement and student participation. The student teacher ratio in daily Academic Language Therapy is typically 2:1. Our current enrollment is 144 students (95 boys, 49 girls), with support from 70 faculty and staff, including 19 academic language therapists. Our students live in Austin, Bastrop, Buda, Cedar Park, Dripping Springs, Lakeway, Leander, McMahan, Pflugerville, Round Rock and Westlake Hills. Current students have moved to Austin to attend Rawson Saunders School from Houston, Dallas, and other parts of Texas, and from as far away as New York City, Vermont, Switzerland and Australia so that they can benefit from the world-class instruction and support we provide. We give dyslexic students the skills they need to be proficient readers, but more importantly, to flourish as people, and excel as students. Rawson Saunders is accredited and commended by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and is a member of the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA), the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the Texas Private Schools Association, and the Austin Private School Association. About Dyslexia: Dyslexia is a neurologically based, often familial, specific learning difference that interferes with the acquisition and processing of language. Varying in degrees of severity, dyslexia primarily affects a person’s ability to read text and often also affects writing, spelling, handwriting, and sometimes math. Individuals with dyslexia are bright and may have significant strengths in multiple areas. According to the International Dyslexia Association, 15-20% of the population exhibit symptoms of dyslexia. While there is no “cure” for dyslexia, specific teaching techniques and remediation have been proven to greatly reduce the difficulties associated with this learning difference. Services for the Community: Rawson Saunders School supports the dyslexic community of central Texas and the country with a number of publicly available resources. Tutoring Services: After school hourly instruction in Academic Language Therapy, math, or writing by specially trained instructors. Academic Language Therapy Lab: After school hourly instruction in Academic Language Therapy. Community Education Series: Information sessions with experts on topics related to dyslexia. The Rawson Saunders Institute: A teacher training center and resource for educators, parents, and others interested in learning how to support students with dyslexia. The Rawson Saunders Institute is one of a small number of training centers in the country. It is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) and is a member of the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA).
