Today, we are the largest provider of after school arts programming, arts enrichment, and character education programming in Central Texas.

About This Cause

The mission of Creative Action is to spark and support the academic, social and emotional development of young people. Through interactive classroom performances, after school arts residencies and community-based programs, Creative Action’s team of professional Teaching Artists inspire youth to be creative artists, courageous allies, critical thinkers, and confident leaders in their community. Our goal is to give youth the critical life skills, knowledge and strategies necessary to become innovative, successful adults in the 21st Century. We use the creative arts to bring learning to life, helping youth to examine critical social issues, discover their creative voice, set and achieve their goals, work together to solve problems, and build self-confidence. Our research based youth development model is unique and innovative. Unlike traditional arts organizations, we view the creative arts as an active medium through which we teach and deeply engage youth in a student-centered curriculum that supports academic, social and emotional development. Our programs deeply impact high-needs communities, serving 85% low-income students and affecting pressing community issues, from school bullying to teen dating violence, to low academic achievement, to juvenile crime. After participating in Creative Action last year: • 82% of participants said they feel they can use art to express themselves. • 93% of participants said they stand up for people who are being treated unfairly. • 97% reported that they keep trying to figure things out until they understand them. • 95% believe they can make a difference in the world. • 100% of participants identified themselves as leaders We achieve our mission through three core branches of innovative, hands-on arts programming: - In the Classroom: six different multi-day programs for the classroom that use role play, puppetry, song, and dramatic presentations to teach young people about issues including bullying, conflict resolution, racism, literacy and healthy communication; offered in 340 classrooms annually to approx. 10,000 students. - Out of School Time: 550 hours of weekly afterschool arts enrichment classes at 65 area campuses, primarily low-income, in six school districts, reaching more than 4,000 students; special programs, camps, events, festivals, parades, and workshops. - Teen Programs: four troupes of young people ages 14-20 create original works of theatre and public art to educate thousands of peers on important social issues.
