Mission Statement
Driven by our mission of empowering families by providing essential products and support, the Texas Diaper Bank is the only Texas organization exclusively focused on three interconnected public health crises: the diaper gap, period poverty, and the incontinence gap. These are essentials that federal assistance programs like SNAP, WIC, and TANF do not cover, yet are fundamental to health, dignity, and economic stability. Operating with a $1.8 million annual budget and a lean team of 14 staff supported by 5,560 volunteers, our evidence-based model of multi-general care delivers both immediate relief and long-term economic infrastructure, with research demonstrating that diaper assistance generates $11 in community benefits for every $1 invested—the highest documented return of any economic stability intervention. We serve as a critical bridge in the social safety net, addressing a healthcare gap that traps working families in impossible choices between basic necessities and economic advancement.
About This Cause
For 27 years, Texas Diaper Bank has stood at the intersection of dignity and opportunity. Founded by ten United Methodist churches in 1997, we have grown to become South Texas's largest diaper bank, distributing $5.5 million in essential diapering, incontinence, and menstrual products in 2024. Last year, we served 118,200 individuals across all programs—including 42,900 quarterly distributions through our Parenting Essentials program (serving families with babies 0-36 months). Through quarterly distributions of 150 diapers per child and comprehensive resource navigation connecting families to childcare, healthcare, and employment services, we create the economic infrastructure working families need to thrive through our Parenting Essentials program. Research demonstrates that diaper assistance generates $11 in community benefits for every $1 invested—the highest documented return of any economic stability intervention. In tandem with Parenting Essentials, Texas Diaper Bank bolsters multi-generational wellness through our Senior Care Essentials and Flo with Dignity Programs. As one of 36 Diaper Banks nationally who serve older adults (60+), we provide quarterly care packages of incontinence supplies to the humans who contributed to building Bexar County. By providing the basic hygiene supplies that keep seniors engaged and active in their communities, we support entire family units - creating and sustaining economic mobility throughout generations. When grandparents aren't forced to choose between basic hygiene necessities and food, medication, or utilities, research shows that they are more likely to watch grandchildren enabling adult children to work or go to school. The older adults we serve aren't looking for charity; they are courageously creating pathways to mobility across generations. Flo with Dignity is our third key program functioning to support families with women and girls in the household. The number one reason why a woman will forego critical advancement opportunities such as work or school is because of lack of access to period supplies. Creating Flo with Dignity and partnering with multiple colleges across San Antonio allows us to support our mothers, sisters, neighbors, co-workers, and friends as they take the critical first steps to economic stability. Our services aren't charity; they remove barriers that keep hardworking and determined families from reaching basic stability. As an intentionally lean team of 14 employees, we leverage our volunteer base of almost 6,000 annually to function as an extension of our team, packaging the product that ends up in the hands of our neighbors so that every dollar donated or invested goes directly to program support rather than administrative overhead. By supporting Texas Diaper Bank, you empower the most vulnerable members of our community to reclaim their agency, dignity, and lives - ultimately leading to a compassionate, connected community where we can all confidently raise children, experience normal bodily functions, and age with the dignity and respect we all deserve.
