Mission Statement
The mission of WINGS is to bridge the gap between diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, providing comprehensive breast health services to women in Central and South Texas who are uninsured…because everyone deserves a lifetime.
About This Cause
Imagine for a moment that you have just been told that you have breast cancer. One of your worst fears is now a reality. No imagine that you do not have medical insurance or the money to pay for treatment. What little money that you do have is going to feed your family. What are you going to do? For too many Texas women, this is frightening scenario has become their reality. An astounding 21% of women living in our state are without access to medical insurance and of those, 14,000 will be diagnosed annually with breast cancer. Texas has the highest uninsured rate of women in the nation, double the national average. WINGS was formed in 1999 to fill the gap between detection and treatment for uninsured women. We provide free, comprehensive treatment to those who are diagnosed with breast cancer and do not have the financial means to pay for treatment and unfortunately do not qualify for government programs. WINGS remains committed to the mission – focusing on one woman at a time. WINGS works with a network of more than 250 physicians, healthcare facilities, labs, pharmacies and related provide services at no cost to the patient. Our services include: • Active Treatment – Patients in this program and have been diagnosed with breast cancer and need full coverage including chemotherapy, radiation, labs, physician visits and surgical procedures. • Follow-up Care – Patients in the program are breast cancer survivors who are uninsured and need annual mammograms, lab work and physician visits for five years following remission. • COBRA Program – WINGS makes payments of Cobra premiums for women in treatment who are in jeopardy of losing insurance coverage due to lack of funds. • WINGS for Life - Survivorship program which provides current WINGS for Life patients support groups, resource referrals, outreach activities, and events and activities. Once a patient is enrolled in WINGS, they are in our program for life.
