Mission Statement

The Cathedral Center's mission is to provide a safe environment for women and families while working to end homelessness one life at a time. Located in Milwaukee, WI, we serve women and families in crisis by providing emergency shelter, case management and workforce development services to help them secure safe housing and independence.

About This Cause

The Cathedral Center (CCI) achieves its mission by addressing emergency housing situations though access to safe shelter and attending to the underlying contributors to homelessness through case management support. All CCI services are free and our core programs include: Emergency Shelter The Cathedral Center offers shelter for 32 individual women and 8 families each night. Our overflow shelter serves additional women during winter and summer months. Shelter guests receive breakfast, lunch, and an evening meal or hearty snack prepared and served by hundreds of volunteers who provide hospitality services each night. We also offer educational and group activities that enable our guests to gain life skills and build upon existing skills needed to live independently. Case Management The ultimate goal of CCI’s Case Management program is to empower the women and families by helping them identify their own needs, recognize the choices they have, create options for themselves and be a powerful proponent of permanent change in their own lives—and that of their families. • Shelter-based: All women and families who reside in the Cathedral Center’s emergency shelter receive supportive services as they work to resolve their housing, personal, and employment issues. Case Managers work with guests to establish an Individual Plan for Independence focused on goals related to increasing income, securing housing, and personal skill development. They participate in an assessment of physical and mental health, job training needs, educational, legal or other types of assistance, and are referred to the appropriate service providers through a broad network of agency partners. • Community-based: Services are also provided for women and families in the community who are facing a housing crisis, but are temporarily safe. Case Managers help them access community resources to prevent the need for a shelter stay, or at the very least, reduce the length of time in shelter. Through this program, women and families access support as soon as a crisis is identified, rather than waiting to be “outside” and unsafe. Women's Independence Program CCI’s Women's Independence Program (WIP) is a new approach to workforce development within the homeless provider service arena. WIP is unique because it addresses employment barriers specific to women and families struggling with homelessness through a combination of onsite intensive individual support; life-tools; consistent, positive behavior reinforcement; incentives; and access to community resources that will help a marginalized population transition out of homelessness and on to self-support. WIP leverages case management services and a deep understanding of clients’ struggles, recognizing the common lack of healthy support systems. Since its inception in May 2015 WIP has served 60 women in work readiness training, 92 in soft skills and personal development workshops, and 46 women and 27 families have increased their income–achieving the same income results in 7 months of operating that were achieved in all of 2014. Population Served The Cathedral Center serves clients in the metro-Milwaukee area who live at or below the poverty level. Our clients are burdened with generational poverty, suffer from mental illness, addiction and other health issues, and are either unemployed or can be described as “working poor.” The majority of our clients are individual women and single mothers, though more single fathers and traditional families have found their way to our doors in recent years. Every client we serve has a unique story, but the common thread they all share is the lack of a healthy network of support that can mean the difference between a temporary set-back or a lifetime of struggle. The Cathedral Center offers a safe environment, positive human connection, and a caring network of support that may not exist for many of our clients anywhere else. In 2015 The Cathedral Center provided shelter-based services to 400 single women and 80 families including 139 children. We provided Community Case Management to: 48 families including 85 children; and 48 single women.
