About This Cause

Unite Oregon is a community-based organization led by and for people of color, immigrants, refugees, rural communities, and people experiencing poverty. With field offices in Portland, Washington County, and Rogue Valley, we work across Oregon to build a unified intercultural movement for justice. Some recent accomplishments include: BAN RACIAL PROFILING: In 2017 we passed Oregon's first ever End Profiling Act to end racial and other forms of profiling by law enforcement. This law has already reduced racial disparities for felony convictions for possession of controlled substances by up to 80 percent. ENDING HATE CRIMES: In 2019, we passed the Larnell Bruce, Jr. Hate Crimes Act, the strongest anti- hate crimes bill in the country. SUPPORTING REFUGEES IN OREGON: In 2019 we passed a Welcoming Refugees Bill, ensuring that 1,800 refugee refugees resettling in Oregon will continue to get key critical services. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: We provide robust leadership training to 100 immigrants, refugees, and people of color every year. EDUCATION EQUITY: We run parent leadership development programs in Portland Public and David Douglas School Districts to ensure low-income and students of color are prepared and on track to graduate and advance to post- secondary opportunities Other recent accomplishments include: -Training over 2300 new leaders who identify as immigrant, refugee, and people of color -Working with City of Portland to secure a $50,0000 legal defense fund for immigrants and refugee -Working with cities across Oregon to pass inclusion resolutions at the municipal and board level. -Registering over 700 new voters from people of color, immigrant, refugee, and rural communities since 2016 -Trained thousands of immigrants and refugees on their legal rights -Activated more than 500 volunteers -Engaged and trained 45 youth leaders To achieve these victories and others, we focus on four program areas that, when combined, catalyze systemic change: CIVIC ENGAGEMENT. We provide pathways for community members to participate in democratic processes, serve as leaders on boards and commissions, and engage in the issues that matter most to them. POLICY ADVOCACY. We advocate for policy changes at the local, state, and national levels that increase equity and reduce disparities experienced by immigrants, refugees, people of color, rural communities, and people experiencing poverty LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT. We develop new intergenerational leaders through signature leadership development programs, strategic trainings, and on-the-ground leadership positions within our organization and issue campaigns. COMMUNITY ORGANIZING. We support our members to build the organizing skills necessary to impact policies that affect them and to work collaboratively, mobilizing diverse constituencies. We believe that all people have the potential to become leaders and agents of change. Join Unite Oregon and help build a unified, intercultural movement for justice in our state.
