Mission Statement
Insaan means human. Insaan works with philanthropists who want their giving to be more impactful. We do this by investing in innovative social enterprises in India and sub-Saharan Africa that create employment and/or products or services relevant to the poor. We call this high-impact or catalytic philanthropy, 'solutions capital', that has the power to change the lives of many, for better, for good.
About This Cause
Our Vision We envision a more equitable world where the poor and the marginalized are given a chance to lift themselves out of poverty, and realize their full potential. 1. Why? Today, 8 men have as much wealth as 3 billion of the world’s poorest. Some $5 trillion are needed to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Global philanthropy is on the rise and estimated at $1.5 trillion. Yet, it is often short-sighted, fragmented, supply-driven, end-user oblivious, output-focused, not goal-oriented, innovation-averse. Together, we can do better. 2. What? Insaan allocates philanthropic capital to back solutions to global poverty. We call it catalytic capital. We invest in early-stage ventures that create employment and/or deliver a product or service for the poor. We work with and pave the way for other investors. We re-invest financial returns to do more. The rigor of investing. The passion to build a more inclusive world. Insaan means human. How? We connect those who want a better world with those in need and measure that lives are indeed being changed, for the better, and for good. Who? We are a diverse, ethically committed, intellectually engaged and multi-disciplinary team connected to on-the-ground realities and passionate about lifting millions out of poverty. Insaan has built a portfolio of seven investments and focuses on systemic change through its Global Good Lab. It uses the IMP framework, the five dimensions of impact, as well as IRIS+ indicators to reports on its impact. Insaan is guided by research on non-profit strategy, in particular Mark Moore's work on: Theory of leverage Theory of change Theory of scale Insaan is on a mission to change 10 million lives and is looking for like-minded partners.
