Mission Statement
The mission of the California Pops is to advance America’s unique orchestral musical heritage of Broadway, movie, big band and popular music with audiences of all ages throughout the Bay Area. Our live, affordable and family-friendly performances satisfy the requests of our audiences through high-quality musicianship and entertaining presentation of our professional and passionate staff.
About This Cause
Since 1989 the California Pops Orchestra’s motto has been “Your Kind of Music. Your Kind of Orchestra” celebrating the best of American Popular Music from Broadway and Big Band to Hollywood, Light Classics and all-time favorite Pops Standards. Always fresh, always entertaining and always keeping the Pops experience meaningful for each new generation. The Pops is one of only a very few orchestras in the United States that specialize in this uniquely American treasure. For 30 years the CPO has brought the finest of this music to its enthusiastic audiences. These audiences have grown to sell-out proportions for two simple reasons, 1. this is the music they love and 2. the California Pops is passionate about this music and about their audiences. And the California Pops is the only all-request symphony orchestra in the country, proudly presenting music requested by the community it serves. Often these requests are fulfilled in the very next concert. Although inspired by the Boston Pops, CPO has made audience engagement a prime goal through shows that by turns include audience sing-alongs, live radio show formats of the 1930s, comedy and novelty pieces, children on stage with the orchestra for the Holidays and, a runaway favorite, Audience Mail which traditionally begins the second half of each show with the best jokes sent in by the audience since the last show. There is no barrier between the performers and the listeners as they shout greetings to each other to start each show. The Pops never forgets that it belongs to the community and exists solely for their benefit.
