Mission Statement

The Debate Society is a Brooklyn based nonprofit theater company that creates new plays.

About This Cause

The Debate Society (TDS), a Brooklyn based theater company, was founded in 2004 by collaborators Hannah Bos, Paul Thureen (writers/performers) and Oliver Butler (director/developer). TDS has made and produced 8 full-length plays: JACUZZI (Ars Nova, pub. by Sam. French) BLOOD PLAY (Bushwick Starr/Under the Radar at the Public/Williamstown Theater Festival, pub. by Sam. French), BUDDY COP 2 (Ontological-Hysteric Incubator; pub. by Sam. French), YOU’RE WELCOME (The Brick; pub. by Playscripts), CAPE DISAPPOINTMENT (PS122; pub. by Sam. French and in PLAY A JOURNAL OF PLAYS), THE EATEN HEART (Ontological-Hysteric), THE SNOW HEN and A THOUGHT ABOUT RAYA. Current projects include THE LIGHT YEARS (commissioned by CTG – L.A., developed at Sundance Theater Institute and New York Stage and Film). These plays explore the American experience through the lenses of hope and failure, and the stories are often populated with characters that live on the fringe of society. BUDDY COP 2 (2010) was set in a police station in a small Indiana town, celebrating Christmas in August for a little girl with cancer whose final wish is to see the holiday before she dies. BLOOD PLAY (2012) was set in the basement of a house of a family from the post-war 1950's Jewish community in the suburbs of Illinois -- and tells the story of the adults and their adolescent son attempting to assimilate into the neighborhood. TDS' lengthy collaborative process yields detailed portraits of off-kilter, dark funny worlds. TDS are recipients of an Obie Grant, MAP Grant, Jerome Foundation 50th Anniversary Grant, NEFA National Theater Project Grant, Sundance Institute Fellows, winners of a 2010 “Village Voice Best of Award” and the Ars Nova Company-in-Residence 2012-14. As individuals they have received these awards: Hannah Bos - Drama Desk Award and Lortel Nomination for her performance in Will Eno’s THE OPEN HOUSE and the 6 Points Fellowship, Oliver Butler -- OBIE Award for his direction and Lortel Award for Best Play, THE OPEN HOUSE, Paul Thureen OBIE Award for his performance in TDS’s BLOOD PLAY.
