Mission Statement

The mission of Texas Hearing Institute, formerly known as The Center for Hearing and Speech, is to enable children with hearing loss to reach their full potential by teaching them listening, speaking and literacy skills.

About This Cause

Texas Hearing Institute was founded in 1947 by four parents with the foresight to realize that children with hearing loss could learn to listen and speak, and then communicate verbally with their families and the community. Seventy-three years later, Texas Hearing Institute is providing a full range of services to children and families from 36 counties and all socioeconomic levels, and no child is turned away regardless of insurance status or their family’s ability to pay. Audiology Department - Thorough diagnostics and customized amplification plans that include hearing aids or cochlear implants. Also provides free hearing screenings and hearing loss prevention presentations in Title 1 schools. Speech Therapy Services – Intensive therapy and education for infants and children to learn to listen and speak after being fitted with hearing aids or cochlear implants. Auditory-verbal therapy is also provided in English and Spanish for children who lose their hearing later in life, and via teletherapy for families unable to travel to Texas Hearing Institute for onsite sessions. The Melinda Webb School - Masters level teachers of the deaf and low student-teacher ratios help children ages 18 months to six years learn to listen, speak, and read, so they can attend mainstream schools by first grade. The school also enrolls children who do not have hearing loss so they may benefit from learning in its language rich environment. Family Support Services - An educational liaison advocates for children in schools to improve outcomes, a social worker provides family counseling and support groups, and a librarian manages the Melinda Webb School library. Programs for Older Children - Summer Camp for children ages 4 to 10 years old. A leadership program for youth ages 11 to 18 years old provides peer support, helps teens learn how to network and advocate for themselves, and encourages mentorship through volunteering as counselors for the Summer Camp.
