Mission Statement
Public Media for North Texas reaches the fourth-largest population area in the country. Each week, more than 1.6 million people listen to and watch KERA TV, KERA FM, KERA World and KXT 91.7 and access our digital network of websites, social media and mobile apps.
About This Cause
KERA produces original content here in North Texas and, carries the best in national and international public television and radio programs that speak to those who value knowing about local and world issues through trusted, in-depth reporting and discussion. KERA is also among the top three most-watched public television stations for children’s programming, reaching kids at an age when it matters most and opening a world of positive possibilities to help them achieve their potential. The organization’s commercial-free, curriculum-based educational shows reach over 325,000 North Texas children each week, totaling more than 3,300 hours of educational programs each year – a trusted and safe place for children to learn and become ready for success in school and in life. As a member-supported, not-for-profit organization, KERA’s newsroom is full of experienced journalists who tell the stories of North Texas – stories about innovative approaches to education, breakthroughs in health, science and technology and the political decisions that shape our future. In recent years, Art&Seek has brought unprecedented attention to and coverage of the arts in North Texas through reporting and programs on air and online at artandseek.org – where you can also keep up with arts events across the region from KERA’s 3,000-plus community partners that showcase their events via a robust events calendar. Locally-programmed music radio station KXT 91.7 launched in late 2009 to serve the greater Dallas, Fort Worth and Denton metropolitan area - and worldwide at kxt.org. KXT's mix of new music, local music, and legendary songs from favorite artists has given the station one of the largest audiences of any public triple-A music station in the country. The station's musical events include the annual Barefoot at the Belmont series and Summer Cut concert. KXT has its own mobile app, and can be found on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. In the late 1950s, community leaders, educators and owners of commercial television stations joined together to endorse a proposal to start an educational television station in North Texas. KERA Channel 13 went on the air in late 1960 with a limited schedule of programs for teachers and students. Since that time, KERA TV has evolved to carry a full slate of public television programs and independent productions, including an extensive lineup of weekday programs committed to the intellectual and social development of children. KERA also continues to produce local content for its North Texas audience with shows like CEO with Lee Cullum. KERA's public radio station 90.1 FM went on the air in 1974, serving Dallas, Fort Worth and Denton. In subsequent years, the station expanded its broadcast reach to Wichita Falls (88.3), Tyler (100.1) and Sherman (99.3), and to a global audience via kera.org, the KERA app, Facebook and Twitter. KERA FM has a news and information format, including national programs, reports and specials from the KERA newsroom, Think with Krys Boyd and Anything You Ever Wanted to Know with Jeff Whittington. Throughout its history, many of KERA's original productions about the arts, community affairs and current events have received notable national honors including the Emmy Award and the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award, among others. In 2009, a second television channel, KERA WORLD 13.2, was launched and significantly increased the availability and variety of public television programming in North Texas. North Texas Public Broadcasting, KERA’s parent organization, is a not-for profit 501(c)(3) educational organization that, from its earliest days, has largely been funded through the generous financial support from individuals and foundations. NTPB is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. President and CEO Mary Anne Alhadeff leads a staff of approximately 70 full-time employees. NTPB supports the Public Media Code of Integrity.
