Head Start of Greater Dallas, Inc. provides education, social services, health, mental health, nutrition and disability services to 4,152 at risk children ages 0 to 5 years old.
About This Cause
Since its inception in 1965, the Head Start program has been a beacon of hope and support to more than 25 million children and families across the United States. The Head Start program in Dallas County alone has helped more than 55,000 children enter school with a foundation of pre-reading and other skills necessary to achieve academic success. The Head Start program has also helped their families take many important steps towards self-reliance. The Head Start program began operating in Dallas County when the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) sponsored it as a summer program in 1967. The Dallas County Community Action Committee, Inc. (DCCAC) became the new grantee, with 60 children at the St. John Head Start in Grand Prairie in 1968. DCCAC managed the program for the next 20 years. The Head Start program realigned and came under the interim sponsorship of Community Council of Greater Dallas for six months in 1988. The program then incorporated on August 31, 1988 as an independent nonprofit organization known as Dallas County Family Services, Inc. Dallas County Family Services received their first Head Start grant in 1989. In March of 1992, the board of directors decided to change the agency’s name to Head Start to better reflect the agency’s single purpose of providing Head Start services to the local community. Today Head Start of Greater Dallas serves 4,152 children in 46 centers in Dallas. It has over 700 employees who help take care of the world’s most precious investment, the children. Many of those employees have been with the agency for over 10 years assisting children and their families.
