Mission Statement

Habitat for Humanity of Hood County (HFHHC) works in partnership with God and people everywhere to build decent, affordable houses, thereby eliminating poverty housing and homelessness throughout the face of the earth. Since 1996, HFHHC has built simple, decent homes for 113 families, which includes over 400 family members, who otherwise would not have qualified for a traditional home mortgage.

About This Cause

Habitat for Humanity of Hood County (Habitat) was established in August 1996 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Inc. With the generosity of churches, individuals, businesses, and faithful volunteers our local affiliate builds 4 to 5 houses per year. Our Habitat affiliate builds newly constructed houses between September through May, and stops building during the hot, Texas summer days. Typically, approximately 175 volunteers are involved in construction of each Habitat house. In Hood County, Habitat builds 2, 3, or 4 bedroom houses depending on the family needs. The approximate cost to build a Habitat in Hood County is $75,500. Habitat is not a giveaway program. Through volunteer labor and donations of money, materials, and services, Habitat builds simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. These houses are sold to partner families, who are residents of Hood County, at no profit and financed with affordable no-interest loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses. In addition to a down payment and the monthly mortgage payments for 20 years, homeowners invest hundreds of hours (a minimum of 300 hours) of their own labor—known as sweat equity—into building their Habitat house and the houses of others. Habitat’s work is accomplished at the community level in Granbury, Texas, so as an affiliate, we are an independent, locally run, non-profit organization. Our affiliate coordinates all aspects of Habitat building in Hood County, including building site selection, partner family selection and support, house construction, mortgage servicing, accounting, and fund raising. At our local affiliate, all of this work is accomplished by volunteers, since we have no paid staff. Every dollar to Habitat makes a difference in Hood County!
