Mission Statement

Utah Film Center connects people, stories, and ideas, through film exhibition, media arts education, and artists support. Utah Film Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Salt Lake City, Utah.

About This Cause

The Utah Film Center was co-founded by Geralyn Dreyfous with the belief that access to independent film — alongside public radio, public TV, newspapers, and libraries — is a public good, and that film events could act as the “town square,” encouraging a free range of ideas. Twenty-two years after our founding, our film exhibition continues to encourage the free range of ideas, cultivating understanding and empathy throughout Utah communities. By presenting films from around the world that highlight the varieties of human experiences and pairing them with discussions, the Film Center creates space for audiences to engage with the films’ themes and with each other. Our programs include Through the Lens, a partnership with KUER and Radiowest; the multi-award winning Black, Bold, & Brilliant (in partnership with KRCL and RadioACTive), our summer outdoor film series based in downtown Salt Lake City; and our rural film tour. We also host the mountainwest's longest-running queer film festival, which is programmed by and for Utah's LGBTQIA+ community and Tumbleweeds Film Festival for Kids. These programs directly attract thousands of Utahns each year and reach over 750,000 more around the state. While social media trains kids to turn their lens upon themselves; Utah Film Center’s media arts education programs show kids how to turn their lens upon the world. Each year on average, these free programs provide over 21,000 Utah teachers and students skills to critically engage media and to create visually compelling, thoughtfully crafted stories. Critical thinking and communication are skills valuable to kids becoming contributors to their communities. Believing in the need to invest in Utah’s diverse storytellers, our artist support programs expand professional development for Utah’s filmmakers. We now offer workshops on the business of filmmaking and connections to industry. These efforts support over 70 Utah filmmakers and we connected 40 Utah filmmakers to Utah audiences through film exhibition this past year. Artist support also includes fiscal sponsorship, which allows independent filmmakers to receive tax deductible donations. This program supports over 400 active film projects from around the world.
