Mission Statement
Together, we create life-changing wishes for children battling critical illnesses.
About This Cause
Mission Statement Make-A-Wish® creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Wish Impact We are on a quest to bring every eligible child’s wish to life because a wish is an integral part of a child’s treatment journey. Research shows children who have wishes granted build the physical and emotional strength they need to fight a critical illness. This improves their quality of life and produces better health outcomes. A wish transforms the lives of children, their families, volunteers, supporters, medical professionals, and entire communities. Wishes are Granted Worldwide Make-A-Wish Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana is one of 60 chapters throughout the United States and its territories. Since our chapter’s inception in 1984, we have granted over 8,600 wishes, and, during our fiscal year 2018, we granted 403 wishes. Make-A-Wish is the world’s leading children’s wish-granting organization, serving children in every community in the United States and in 50 countries worldwide. Since 1980, more than 450,000 wishes have been granted to children in the U.S. and its territories. Volunteers Make Wishes Come True Together, generous donors, supporters, staff, and 35,000 volunteers across the U.S. grant wishes. Our chapter is governed by a 41-member Board, made up of 25 directors and 16 advisors from both states as well as an 9 (8 full-time and 1 part-time) member staff to cover both states. Volunteer committees assist in all phases of our mission, from child-focused wish teams to solicitation of goods and services, to meet the needs of specific wishes. How Wishes Come True Wish children are referred to Make-A-Wish by immediate family members, medical professionals, or the children themselves. Once Make-A-Wish has been contacted, a medical release form is sent to the child’s primary physician. Upon medical approval, a volunteer team sets up a time to visit with the child to determine the one true wish in that child’s heart. Then the wish team makes the necessary arrangements for the wish to come true (average wish cost is $9,700). The goal is to provide a joyful and meaningful experience that gives the immediate family time together away from medical treatments and medical bills. Who does your donation serve? Children from 47 counties in the Texas Gulf Coast area and all 64 parishes of Louisiana benefit from the efforts of this Make-A-Wish chapter. Your Donation Fulfills the Wishes of Children To maintain the integrity of the mission of Make-A-Wish, responsible stewardship of funds is promised to every donor, sponsor, volunteer, and wish family. Each year, our chapter’s financial records are audited by an independent auditing firm. The fiscal 2018 audit confirmed that 93 cents of every dollar donated was used or set aside for the granting of wishes – the Foundation’s main purpose – while only 7 cents from every dollar went towards administration and fundraising.
