Mission Statement

Houston Children’s Charity is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for Greater Houston’s underprivileged, abused, and disabled children who have been otherwise left behind. The scope of our support is limited only by the availability of resources. Our goal is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered.

About This Cause

Since 1996, Houston Children’s Charity (HCC) has cared for those who are in need in the Greater Houston Area. We come to the assistance of those who are struggling, and over the last 26 years, we have partnered with more than 300 agencies to provide services to these children and their families in our community. We provide children beds, clothing, and school supplies, and also have a program that provides accessible transportation for families with disabled and wheelchair-bound children. In partnership with the U.S. Marines Toys for Tots, we distribute thousands of toys during the holidays, and match individual and corporate sponsors to support entire families through our Adopt-A-Family program. We also grant organizational funding requests, including the TEACH program at Blackshear Elementary, and have supported the Texas Children’s Cancer Center’s Emergency Fund at Texas Children’s Hospital since 2006. Signature Programs: Houston Children’s Charity served over 30,000 children in 2022 across several program areas, and we partner with dozens of agencies and organizations who are actively engaged with those in need to match our resources and programs with the clients they serve. Our most recent partners for our A Better Night’s Sleep (ABNS) program, wherein we distribute 100 new twin beds (and bedding) a month to children without a bed, include the Collaborative for Children, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, CASA, Texas Children’s Hospital, and Rainbow Youth Center. Referrals for our HCC Closet, which allows families to “shop” and pick out a designated number of clothing items, come for Kids Meals, Texas Children’s Hospital, DePelchin Children’s Center, Rainbow Youth Center, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, Harris County Community Youth Services, Assurance Therapeutic Outreach, Anchor Community Services, and Amerigroup Medicaid. We have a longstanding partnership with the Rod Ryan Show (FM 94.5 The Buzz) in support of our Back2School program, with listener donations providing funds to purchase backpacks filled with school supplies, helping raise both funds and awareness for our organization. Our Chariots for Children program provides new, wheelchair accessible vans to families (and sometimes schools and other organizations, such as The Arbor School). Each vehicle we grant makes a profound impact on the lives of families we serve, and who struggle with a lack of transportation options. We partner with United Access to provide new, safe and reliable handicap accessible vans so they may transport their children who are wheelchair-bound or have other serious disabilities or illnesses. Many families with disabled children must lift both child and wheelchair in and out of a family car, sometimes multiple times a day, and injuries are sadly not uncommon. These burdens, physical and otherwise, often limit how often a disabled child can leave the home or be a part of the community at large, and this affects the family dynamic as well. Thus, the magnitude of this assistance has a profound impact not just on the life of the mobility-impaired child, but the entire family. We continue to consider agency requests for 12-passenger vans on a case-by-case basis, but our primary focus currently is to assist families directly. HCC also supports t the Cancer Center at Texas Children's Hospital, by providing $100,000 of support each year to the Emergency Fund. This fund pays for out-of-pocket expenses like, meals, parking, accommodations, etc. for low-income families who have no other means to pay for these expenses while a child is undergoing treatment.
