Mission Statement
The Harris School provides individualized academic and therapeutic interventions designed to teach new skills, promote effective patterns of behavior and improve quality of life for young children and their families.
About This Cause
Working with a child’s challenging behaviors in a nurturing, therapeutic environment is the sole focus of The Harris School -- the only school in Houston offering such services for young children ages three through 12. The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and offers a sound academic curriculum based on the Texas Essential Elements. The therapeutic program uses positive behavior support through a team approach in collaboration with teachers, therapists, parents, students and outside health care providers. The program also includes weekly social skills and processing groups with students, a parental support group and weekly therapy sessions with the parents (attendance required). The Harris School helps young children get back on course, so they can learn and achieve in ways that are positive for themselves, their families and society. Ultimately, the goal is to transition students from The Harris School back into a more mainstream academic setting with stronger coping skills and renewed hope in themselves and in school. After an average stay of two to three years, 88 percent of students graduate to a more typical school setting. In the 2018-2019 school year, 15.4 percent of the school’s student body were ready to move on.
