About This Cause

The Hung Vuong Vietnamese Language and Culture School is a non-profit organization founded in 1986 with Vietnamese classes held at Houston Community College – Central Campus in Houston, Texas. Hung Vuong offers approximately 18 classes held every Sunday morning between 9 am and 12 pm. Classes are conducted all year long from August through December (Fall semester) and January through May (Spring semester). The students’ tuition is minimal ($220/year) and covers facility costs, books, and activity fees. The school consists of two levels: Level I (Elementary) has 6 grades from Kindergarten to 5th grade and Level II (Middle School) has 5 grades from 6th to 9th grade. Hung Vuong has a student population of over 300 students ranging from 5 to 18 years of age as well as a small group of adult students. These adults consist of college students, professionals, and educators who have a strong desire to learn the Vietnamese language and culture for personal enrichment in addition to supplementing their professional work or education. The teaching staff includes over 40 volunteer teachers – many of whom hold advanced degrees – and approximately 20 teachers’ assistants, most of whom are Hung Vuong graduates. At Hung Vuong, we encourage the balance of learning and fun. Exciting cultural events are held throughout the school year including the mid-autumn festival and Lunar New Year festivities with traditional food, music, singing, and dragon dances. Other fun activities include the annual Vietnamese spelling bee, essay contest, and a summer graduation picnic. At graduation, students are honored and rewarded in a ceremony complete with certificates, caps and gowns, and gifts. There are also periodic fundraisers, dinners, and various events in which parents are encouraged to participate. To this day, Hung Vuong is the oldest Vietnamese Language and Culture School in Houston with an impeccable reputation of having a rich curriculum and a volunteer group of well-qualified and passionate teachers who provide our students with an excellent education. The Hung Vuong Vietnamese Language and Culture School is an IRS 501(c)(3), federal tax-exempt non-profit organization. All donations are tax-deductible.
