Mission Statement

We are on a mission to build paths out of poverty empowered by the love of Jesus.

About This Cause

Main Street Ministries in Houston is a non-profit organization on a mission to create paths out of poverty inspired by the love of Jesus. Our core values are to create community, remove barriers, affirm value/purpose and empower change. We are dedicated to serving individuals and families in need, particularly those who are experiencing homelessness and poverty. Because the needs and circumstances of every person vary, our programs and services are multifaceted. The Operation ID Program assists clients on their journey to employment, housing, education or medical assistance in gathering supporting documentation, completing forms, and funding an official state-issued ID or birth certificate along with related documentation. Having a photo ID paves the way to obtain a job, secure housing, enroll in school, vote, as well as other life stabilizing goals. This task becomes challenging when you consider that some were born at home and their birth was never registered with the state. Clients seeking financial support with this process must present a referral letter from an approved MSM partner agency. Operation ID is our longest running program and because the need is so great, it is quite common for que lines to wrap around our building. Over 300 ? volunteers work tirelessly to support these individuals every Tuesday and Thursday. Our goal is to double the numbers served to help meet the community demand Life Empowerment workshops support community members secure housing, achieve stability, and move towards sustainability. Through our workshops: Getting Ahead, Hacia Delante, Getting Ahead in the Workplace, Getting Ahead for Youth, and the Staying Ahead series. Life Empowerment begins with Getting Ahead (GA), an award-winning curriculum that helps participants develop a sustainable plan to move out of poverty and prevent homelessness. GA is a five-month, entry-level program that includes 40 classroom hours and four one-on-one personal coaching sessions. Classes consist of 15 clients. The small-group format allows individuals to build a tight-knit community based on trust and peer support which fosters positive change. Clients are empowered to develop a sustainable income, create healthy financial habits, enhance physical and emotional health, improve personal and family relationships, and reignite faith. They do this by examining their lives, setting goals, developing skills, and building resources. People living in poverty are resilient and great at solving short-term problems. However, GA introduces them to long-term problem solving solutions which is essential when considering life-sustaining goals. We track each client’s progress using a stability scale that measures success and keeps individuals motivated. We are proud to say that some all GA workshops are facilitated by GA graduates who go through in-depth training to serve as facilitators and mentors to current students. This leadership development opportunity is life-changing. These volunteers are honored to give back to the community that helped them in a time of need. For families that graduate from GA, Life Empowerment continues with Family Hope, a four -month extension program focused on goal setting and attainment. The curriculum offers ? classroom hours. and six small group coaching sessions. Financial coaching, parenting classes, social networking opportunities, and other support services help participants apply lessons from the group sessions, improve their financial habits, and take steps to achieve stability. To enroll in Life Empowerment programs, clients must have a strong desire to make changes in their lives and have some type of housing with at least a minimal stable income. They must be enrolled in a mentorship, case management, or other relational program with a support organization. These organizations then refer clients to enroll in our programs. Some referring agencies include: Brigid’s Hope , The Council on Recovery, Covenant House, Houston Area Women’s Center, New Hope Housing, Small Steps Nurturing Center, Star of Hope Mission, etc. Because MSM cannot meet every individual need, Resource Navigation connects participants with the most relevant community resources available that can support their steps toward stability and growth. Volunteers and staff members help participants navigate the myriad of Houston organizations and identify those that fit their needs. We connect them to hundreds of programs and opportunities for housing, benefits, employment, healthcare, a home church, etc. This program is individualized and time-intensive, because every client receives one-on-one appointments and a “warm hand-off”. This means that we make calls, set-up appointments, follow-up, and track outcomes for each client.
