Mission Statement

To prevent the suffering and death of companion animals and to enrich the human-animal bond by providing excellent, accessible and affordable spay/neuter and veterinary care.

About This Cause

In 1994, in response to dog and cat overpopulation and unacceptably-high shelter kill rates in Houston/Harris County, SNAP was created to pioneer the nation’s first spay/neuter clinic on wheels to serve clients who live below poverty level. SNAP operated under the 501(c)(3) umbrella of The Fund for Animals until we incorporated as a separate nonprofit charity in July of 1999. Throughout our existence, SNAP has had clinics and/or operations in Houston, Dallas, Pasadena, and San Antonio, Texas; Native American reservations in the Four Corners area of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado; and Los Angeles, California. For four years, we ran a mobile clinic project in Monterrey, Mexico, which expanded to stationary clinics in Morelia at the University of Michoacan and in Juarez, as well as special projects in Mexico City. In addition to Mexico, SNAP’s international reach has included projects in American Samoa, the Cayman Islands, the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, India, and Panama. SNAP pioneered the field of mobile spay/neuter and continues to be a leader in both mobile and high-efficiency spay/neuter. Because SNAP is in this unique position, numerous mobile programs and veterinarians training in high-efficiency spay/neuter have been assisted by and/or modeled their programs on SNAP. Animal overpopulation and suffering is being alleviated across the globe as a result of SNAP’s influence. In January of 2015, SNAP passed our half-million spay/neuter surgeries milestone. In addition to the hundreds of thousands of people and pets who have been helped through our programs, the births of millions of unwanted puppies and kittens have been prevented. We are currently operating in two major metropolitan areas: Greater Houston and San Antonio. These areas are comprised of sixteen Texas counties, which in total are home to almost nine million residents. Services in these communities are provided through a network of stationary and mobile clinics (Houston, Pasadena, and San Antonio). A majority of our clients live at or below poverty level. We also serve a large segment of the Hispanic communities in both Houston and San Antonio. SNAP is well-regarded by both the general public and other animal welfare organizations. In January we were named “Best Spay/Neuter Clinic” by the Houston Press for the second year in a row. Based on client reviews, we were named a “Top Nonprofit” by Great Nonprofits, and we consistently receive positive responses from our clients and donors. We are continually striving to increase efficiency so that we can keep prices as low as possible. SNAP’s morbidity/mortality rates have been consistently very low— exceeding generally-accepted standards. We are under a three-year contract with the City of Houston/BARC and have significantly increased the number of surgeries we’re doing for shelter pets. This shortens the length of time animals stay in the shelter before moving to their adoptive homes.
