Mission Statement
ICLD was created in 1998 to assist with closing the college, career, and postsecondary education completion gap among first generation, low socioeconomically disadvantage, non-traditional, historically underrepresented populations; including veteran and ADA student groups. Strategically ICLD concentrates on individuals transitioning from high school, college, military, incarceration, and drop out status. Overarching emphasis is placed on integrating career interests with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) programs and industry needs.
About This Cause
ICLD provides services in various, innovative settings from monthly workshops, to artistic master classes to an annual College, Career and Empowerment Summit that was launched in 2013 during NBA ALL-STAR week. Our services include, but are not limited to: Career and Employment Development, College and Career Readiness, Job Placement, Career Assessments, Educational Trainings, Finding one's passion through education and attaining a higher education, Professional Mastery in occupations through Master Classes taught by both notable and local professionals, and Strategically mentor students into Career Placements in non-traditional and traditional fields of interest. Our annual College, Career and Empowerment Summit (CCES) is a city-wide, teen interactive Summit in which we have partnered with both the City of Houston and over 19 high school districts. CCES is the premiere event that connects participants physical agility to mental models through emphasis on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. The CCES also functions as an annual conduit that fosters a citywide college going culture among youth. Participants are engaged in open, collaborative, interactive, and innovative platforms that stimulate a solution-based approach to developing a well educated and career ready 21st-century millennial. The summit is open to students from across Houston and surrounding areas and is free to all registrants. This event offers post secondary institutions the opportunity to collectively recruit high school students through a directed event. More important, as the students move towards secondary graduation college involvement and the presence of celebrities and brand ambassadors from notable professionals propels students to their next level of education and success. Some of our past partners and panelists have included NASA, HP, Halliburton, Dr. Howard White (NIKE), Grammy-nominated and Broadway Actress Támar Davis, entrepreneur Drew Nunnally (Acre in a Box), Dr. Ashandra Batiste (BRAVO TV), and City Controller Ronald Green, just to name a few. We value education in a hands-on environment as well as offer post-mentorship programs to see each student all the way to their desired goals. We are honored to finally receive this recognition and continue to grow our programs as well as expand to other cities and foster a network of Career and Leadership readiness.
