Mission Statement

Camp Hertko Hollow is dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth who have diabetes. The goals at camp are: Recreation, Education, Regulation and FUN! Campers enjoy the traditional camp activities while learning about living with diabetes. Meeting other youth and counselors who have diabetes is also a great benefit of the experience.

About This Cause

Since 1968 Camp Hertko Hollow has provided kids with diabetes (ages 6-17) a summer camp experience where they learn diabetes management and skills that help to better their health and their lives. Camp Hertko Hollow provides camp programs on the scenic grounds of the Y Camp located north of Boone, Iowa. This beautiful atmosphere offers a variety of activities like archery, swimming, horseback riding, crafts, and rock climbing (just to name a few). These activities allow campers to try things outside of their normal routine, gain new hobbies, and discuss what they learn about character and personal growth. Interacting with other campers while they check their blood sugars, take their insulin, and talk about how they handle their diabetes are some of the most powerful learning opportunities that occur at camp. Our medical staff is comprised of top-notch medical professionals including physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, dietitians, and pharmacists who understand the complexity of managing diabetes. The staff to camper ratio is less than 1 to 4, ensuring lots of responsible adults, looking out for our campers, with the knowledge and experience to make sure our campers have a fun and SAFE week away from home!
